Athletics and CSO

Wit the recent success of the team, it's nice to see people take interest in adding onto the men's basketball portion. However, this season gets an excessive amount of coverage and the mention of the starting players is redundant. I am going to narrow it down so it is more balanced with the 1978 season. Amiaheroyet (talk) 23:03, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I also noticed that the portion discussing the Community Service Officer Program is rather detailed and biased. As much as I respected the 'uniformed officers' of our campus, it distracts away from other parts of the article. This will also be shortened Amiaheroyet (talk) 00:52, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

"Fastest Growing" claim

I took the liberty of the rewording the first sentence in the introduction section. The old version claimed that CSUF "...is the fastest growing California State University campus." This is obviously impossible, as CSULB narrowed the enrollment gap over the last year (see CSU Statistical Reports. The author may have been referring to a form of growth other than enrollment figures, but if so, it should have been stated. --Foolishgrunt (talk) 18:01, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:CSUF Stacked C.gif

Image:CSUF Stacked C.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Mass murder

Shouldn't this mention the mass murder that occured on campus in the 70's? (7 or 8 people shot to death in the library) Not mentioning this fact seems less than forthcoming. I'll try to add this later on if nobody else does.

---Actualy it was some janator who staked out the top floor of the Humanities building and started popping off people in the quad infront of the library. As I recall anyway. As I also recall it was that, and a spate of sucides, that lead to the enclosure of the balconies in the Humanities building.

  • Absolutely incorrect. Edward Charles Allaway (a janitor) killed seven fellow university employees in the basement and first floor of what is now known as Pollack Library on the morning of July 12th, 1976. Two other victims were wounded and survived. While he used a .22 caliber rifle in the crime, NO SHOTS were fired from any building. The jumping suicides from the Hall of Social Sciences and Humanities have NOTHING to do with the Allaway massacre. T.E. Goodwin 09:05, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

You should. Its pretty important.

Done. I'm working on adding a lot more things.

What about the half a nuclear reactor that melted down or something in the 60s (when the atom was our friend). Because of it you cant go to half of the basement the old science building. I swear I lost a couple points off my sperm count by using that computer lab right by the leadlined "KEEP OUT RADIATION HAZARD" doors.

  • Again, absolutely incorrect. The "old science building" is known as McCarthy Hall. The research reactor was in the basement and was utilized by members of the Physics faculty and graduate students for research. There was NEVER a fissionable accident or "meltdown." The doors were NOT leadlined, although standard radiation warning signs were posted as required by law. T.E. Goodwin 09:27, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

What about the ghost that haunts the elevators in the McCarthy Hall on sundays? That is due to a death of a physics professor when he was shot by a student due to "suspicious love affair". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.232.153.171 (talk) 03:08, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Demographics of Student Body

I highly doubt that the student body is 0.5% Asian and nearly 30% international students. Can someone provide a citation for this? Pwordisony (talk) 00:32, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Commuter's Campus

CSUF has always had a high percentage of commuting students as student housing on-campus was woefully inadequate in the '60's and'70's. A lot of us had apartments in the area and I commuted in from North Tustin where I lived with my parents as an undergrad. CSUF epitomizes the "car-culture campuses" of Southern California.T.E. AANAPISI

A section citing CSUF as a AANAPISI was removed by anon contributors here and here. I looked at the refeernced page and it linked to this 2010 MS Word document that shows AANAPISI campuses and does not show CSUF. Google brought up another quick check here showing CSUF isn't AANAPISI.

I will try to do some digging, but unless we see evidence, I guess we should leave it off.

Any suggestions?

KNHaw (talk) 00:20, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

I haven't yet found a definitive list but the federal definition requires that the institution "has an enrollment of undergraduate students that is at least 10 percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander" and this institution has an enrollment of 20% Asian American undergraduate students so it seems to eligible for this classification. It's included in this listing but it looks like that list includes both Title III and Title V institutions so the precise designation(s) of the institution isn't completely clear from that list alone. This Department of Education website has an embedded Google map with these institutions and Cal State Fullerton is on that map. ElKevbo (talk) 01:02, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
I think the map alone would be enough for a reference. The others just cite CSUF as eligible. Can we cite both somehow in a ref? KNHaw (talk) 02:10, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Cal State Fullerton may be eligible but we are not official an AANAPISI site. the wording makes it sound like we are. We are definitely a Hispanic Serving Institution. Seems there are a lot of assumptions being made without definitive proof. Clarity would be eligible. Tkmahi 23:36, 5 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

CSUF Updates

Hello

My name is Mike Mahi and I work in the Cal State Fullerton strategic communications department. I have made a few updates including adding our new president. Several of those changes have been flagged. The updates I made were simple changes to existing numbers that were old and out of date. I opened a discussion in Tkmahi page. I would like to remove the warning templates and see how we can go about changing out of date references. I am looking forward to your response. Tkmahi 22:22, 5 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

CSUF Campus shootings section moved

Hello.

This is a continuing issue. A couple of days ago I tried to simply change out our old president and replace with the newly appointed president. I also updated a couple of numbers as well. The new president's name is back and that is all good. But there are several areas that have old data that were changed to be current and now are back to the old numbers.

Also, since 2012 we have had the campus shootings lower on the page and now someone has taken and move them high on the page. That move back in 2012 was approved and there has never ever been any question about it until now. Niot sure why it was moved back to near the top but that tragic event in no way defines what this university is and yes it is important to the history of the university but why move it up now after nearly 6 years of it being lower on the page?

I have a list of changes that would be helpful if they were made and I would be willing to do them if allowed. Otherwise, I can add the suggested edits in this forum and rely on y'all to fix or ignore. Please let me know what is the preference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs) 23:33, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Which editors have a conflict of interest here?

@James Allison: Can you explain why you added this COI tag to this article? Jarble (talk) 01:15, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I can. James (talk/contribs) 17:52, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Hey folks. I suspect you are talking about me. I was transparent with my edits and did say I work for the university. The changes I made were simply updates for the president and updating a few out of date numbers. @James Allison: I've asked for some clarification and didn't get any. I would love to remove the maintenance templates. This started out simply as an update to add our new president and now we have the page reverted back to something from 2012 which puts the campus shootings in an above the fold position. Any help and or guidance would be appreciated. Tkmahi 18:29, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

In spite of the fact that your data are not properly sourced, I've restored them. In regard to the placement of the shooting section: it is appropriately discussed in the "history" section of this page, as it is a major part of the history of the institution that engenders national coverage [1] [2] -- arguably, one of your institution's "claims to fame". You removed it from the history section in 2012. Burying it at the bottom of the page in a section that does not make structural sense violates Wikipedia's policy on writing with a neutral point of view (See Wikipedia:Be neutral in form and WP:UNIGUIDE), and the violation's motive is obvious when your concern is with placement "above the fold". James (talk/contribs) 20:54, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

@James Allison:Thanks for the feedback. I'll make sure to just post in here any other suggestions. It would be nice to go in and update in order to speed up the process and not burden other editors and volunteers. Again, my motivation is not to bury the shooting (yes I used the ATF as a reference)but rather to illustrate that at some point that shooting will be a distant memory certainly worth documenting but perhaps not in a section that puts such importance. I also received permission/ acknowledgment from other editors who eventually said it was ok to move back in 2012 so that's why I was surprised it was put back. I have an audit trail of those discussions with @72Dino and @ElKevbo. They raised a similar issue but eventually said they didn't have a problem with it. I would also ask can we suggest more historical references and in chronological order? Again, thanks for your insights and thoughtful response. Tkmahi 21:14, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

A well-sourced and neutral expansion of the university's history would be helpful in ameliorating any perceived issues with over-emphasis of the mass shooting. James (talk/contribs) 23:04, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Planned Expansion

@James Allison I updated the section to reflect the current status of the project. with a citation. Hope I did it correctly.

Planned expansion[edit] The CollegeTown plan – a series of zoning changes that would have paved the way for 88 acres of high-density development on and around Cal State Fullerton and Hope International University – has stalled with the city’s Planning Commission. No new plans have been introduced. [15] Tkmahi 21:33, 8 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

I appreciate the use of a third-party source. However, simply copying and pasting material from a newspaper article is generally not allowed as it violates the newspaper's copyright. James (talk/contribs) 23:09, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi @James Allison Ok. So you've rewritten the description and thank you. Can I remove the big red warning template or is there another bit of information that is needed? If the statement that says no new plans are in the works needs attribution then we can remove it.

2. Not sure where to get a third party source other than the CSU itself and I have included the link to the degree page: The Orange County university offers over 109 degrees including 57 different bachelor's degrees, 52 types of master's degrees, three doctoral degrees including a Doctor of Nursing and two Doctor of Education, and 19 teaching credentials. [7][8][9][self-published source][third-party source needed]

3. We did pay for the economic report which was done by a third-party vendor. We simply updated the information we had from a previous economic report. I searched for newspaper articles that might have mentioned it and the only one I got was from Forbes and a aggregator site that republished our press release.

Here are the links to both those articles: Forbes https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?toURL=https://www.forbes.com/colleges/california-state-university-fullerton/&refURL=https://www.google.com/&referrer=https://www.google.com/

https://article.wn.com/view/2017/03/20/Study_CSUF_Boosts_Economy_by_226_Billion/

This is what is on the site Spending related to CSUF generates an impact of around $$2.26 billion to the California and local economy, and sustains nearly 15,000 jobs statewide.[11][promotional or fringe source?][self-published source][third-party source needed]

Please let me know what else I need to do to fix any issues and have the warning templates removed. In all honesty we are simply trying to help keep the site current. There is no ulterior motive or us trying circumvent the rules. We understand and appreciate those rules in place and only wish to make this process as painless as possible. Let me know and again, thanks for all your help and guidance Tkmahi 21:50, 10 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

I appreciate your wish to keep this page current. Certainly, editors here share the same desire. In regard to the banners, there are systemic issues which may require a large rewrite to ensure this page reads as an encyclopedia article and not just a college brochure.
For example, much of the material under Rankings and distinctions, while not necessarily inappropriate, needs to be rewritten and consolidated to place it in an encyclopedic context, rather than a simple list of awards. Like you've mentioned before, the history section needs to be expanded in a neutral and well-sourced manner. The description of the main campus is wholly unreferenced. Many items mentioned under Campus amenities or Notable people could be applied to any major university -- what is their significance in the context of Fullerton?
I believe a good first step would be to browse for material that discusses CSUF in a scholarly context. Have there been books written about, say, your college's sports teams? Does your library have a Special Collections department that documents the school's history? These are possible avenues you may want to look into. James (talk/contribs) 00:52, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks @James Allison. I'll keep looking for better sourced material and rewrites for the ranking section and other areas. Do you suggest me going in and doing it or offering up on this talk page suggested content and links? Thanks and your explanation was very helpful. Tkmahi 00:58, 11 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

According to the guideline on paid editing, the preferred avenue would be to propose edits on this talk page. James (talk/contribs) 13:39, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks @James Allison that's perfect. Will do. Can we remove the other warning templates while we look for replacement or additional history information as well as third-party citations. Don't want to delete or edit unless it is approved. Thanks. and Aloha! Tkmahi 17:25, 11 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkmahi (talkcontribs)

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of California State University, Fullerton's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
