Spelling[edit]

I don't know how to arrive at the correct English spelling, and don't know from what source this information comes. But is it possible that the correct spelling might be Buoy? The coat of arms sure looks like a buoy. If, however, you're certain of the spelling and it comes from a reliable source, then the article can be moved without an admin's assistance. zadignose 15:12, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Wikipedia, Russian names are romanized in accordance to WP:RUS, a guideline for romanization of the Russian language based largely on BGN/PCGN romanization of Russian (a system extensively used in English-language mapping resources). This is done for consistency and standardization purposes.

On the other hand, the Russian word "буй" (buy) is, indeed, translated as "buoy" (which is exactly why a buoy is shown on the coat of arms), although, ironically, the word meant "a hill" or "a place near a church" around the time the town was founded. It's important to remember, however, that the name of a town is a proper name, and as such should not be translated (as proper names are almost exclusively transliterated, not translated).

That said, there is nothing preventing anyone from mentioning what the town name means (and used to mean) in the article's body. That is no good reason to change the article's title, however; as no English-language map would show the town as "Buoy".

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't actually in favor of changing the spelling of the article title, but was rather responding to the request to spell it "Bouy" which doesn't match either of the above mentioned spellings. My comment was intented to point out that "Buoy" is the correct spelling of the floatation device, and that I have no information regarding the town name. However, your argument in favor of retaining "Buy" is persuasive, and should be favored unless a reliable source can be presented to refute it. zadignose 00:32, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
