"Billions of pounds were wiped from its stock market value despite the Government’s pledge to keep it afloat with more money from the taxpayer."

Perhaps a subtle point, but a company's share price could fall at the same time as the probability of the company going bust also falls. Indeed, is a nationalised bank considered to be "afloat", from an operational point of view?
