Media coverage during 2008 presidential election[edit]
I would have thought there would be a section relating to this in the article. I saw a segment on 60 Minutes (I think) about the Black McCains that aired during the election campaign, and it struck me as a pretty blatant attempt to link the senator to his slave-holding ancestors. I would have assumed there would have been more coverage and more of an impact by similar stories on both sides, as the timing at which it aired (an older white male running against a younger black male who would become the first African American to be president) was conspicuous. Anyway, I just figured the family and their coverage in the media has got to have some noteworthy impact on the election. Not that I'd know what it is, just seems like an obvious omission to me and I'd be curious to know more. Dr. Cheis (talk) 07:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The story about McCain's ancestors owning slaves came out during his 2000 presidential campaign (see footnote 5), so it was old news by 2008. The Black McCains were new news, but they were presented as a compelling human interest story; it didn't have any political effect one way or another.
