Location[edit]

A factual article stub has been inserted, to complete the places around Wigan, within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and Metropolitan Borough of St Helens. - 80.192.249.223

I have inserted this paragraph:
"The postal Location of Billinge is a strange one. Despite being a part of the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in Merseyside and having a postcode belonging to Wigan in Greater Manchester, Billinge is actually a part of the county of Lancashire."
I Know this because I live there ;) - Rickwitter
I also live there. However, Billinge is regarded as being the village centre. As you get out towards Orrell, around Longshaw, it is called 'Higher End', yes, but it isn't Billinge. And Winstanley is a place in it's own right. I used to run the Shell station in Billinge and that was under St.Helens. Note: I say 'under' St.Helens as opposed to 'in' St.Helens, because it's in Billinge. Is St.Helens in Warrington? You would say "How can St.Helens be in Warrington"? Well, most of St.Helens has a Warrington postcode. That rules out the postcode theory. - 80.192.242.187

Does anyone know if the 'famous natives' lived in Billinge village or were just born in Billinge Hospital?. If they were born in the hospital and did not live in Chapel End they should be moved to the Billinge and Winstanley article which includes a sub-section about the hospital. - Man2

If a Dog is born in a Stable, is it a Horse? - 80.192.242.187
Lol no he will remain a dog, however seeing as Billinge Village and Billinge Hospital are in two different Borough's and counties this needs to be sorted. If they were born in the hospital and lived in the village put them as notable people of both places. simple. - 81.77.129.35
This is getting silly. Billinge Hospital is not actually in Billinge, as any knowledgeable local will confirm. Don't ask the young people of today, because they haven't a clue where anywhere is. Maybe, when their feet finally touch down, they'll get the shock of their lives!
As regards 'county', well, they are both in Lancashire. Read this:
.............. 'Note that the LGA 1972 did not do anything to the historic Counties of Britain. It only abolished the administrative counties and county boroughs. The Government was (and still is) happy to confirm that the Counties themselves were unaffected...'
"The new county boundaries are solely for the purpose of defining areas of ... local government. They are administrative areas, and will not alter the traditional boundaries of Counties, nor is it intended that the loyalties of people living in them will change." Source:(DoE Statement, 1st April 1974). ....... - 80.192.242.187
I know that quote too, but - they lied. If they were only administrative areas then why do they have lord lieutenants for ceremonial purposes as Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cumbria and others do now? As for changing loyalties, try telling someone from Liverpool aged under 30 that they are Lancastrian.

I remember being astonished (fairly recently) to be greeted with a sign saying 'Welcome to Lancashire' as I left Blackburn - has anyone told the Beatles (also once Lancastrians!) that they need to update their song to say '4000 holes in the administrative area of Blackburn-with-Darwen which is no longer in administrative but is still in ceremonial Lancashiiiiree'! They could stop it by no longer calling these ever-changing administrative areas 'counties' and restoring the ceremonial areas to the historic counties, why won't they? 94.194.15.94 (talk) 20:08, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you finally somebody with some sense. The site of Billinge Hospital is and never has been in the village of Billinge. The end of Billinge village is where the sign says welcome to the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan. If you were born in the hospital and did not live in the village you have no connection to Chapel End whatsoever. Billinge village is in Merseyside, Billinge Hospital is in Greater Manchester and both are within the historic borders of Lancashire. How can this be so complicated?. - 81.77.129.35

Telephone area codes[edit]

Only Billinge Chapel End uses 01744, Billinge Higher End uses 01695. - Man2

Actually, one side of the road, in Billinge Higher End uses the 01695 dialling code and the other side uses the 01942 dialling code. Billinge itself has a telephone exchange just off Main Street and it is linked to the 01744 dialling code. 80.192.242.187 23:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC) JemmyH.[reply]

Greenfield Orphanage Billinge.[edit]

Is there any information as regards Greenfield Orphanage. I was there as a boy till 1953. It was also a Nunnery and the Orphanage was run by the Sisters. I believe that overall supervision was by the Childrens Department in Wigan. I was fostered to a family in Hindley and had regular visits from a member of the Childrens Department. Orphanboy.
