Non-Tolkien?[edit]

"[I]n the game The Quest of Erebor, Gandalf is given the (non-Tolkien) lines "So naturally, thinking over the hobbits that I knew, I said to myself, 'I want a dash of the [adventurous] Took ..."

I believe this is Tolkien. It is taken from the story "The Quest of Erebor" in "Unfinished Tales." I do not have a copy at hand to compare and I have never seen the game. I'm not sure that a reference to a game at this point in the article is appropriate, anyway. Wastrel Way (talk) Eric

"not compatible"[edit]

Chiswick Chap, why don't you specify what you find "clumsy" about my wording rather than having a huff about it? 2601:642:4600:BE10:34EE:411B:3EF3:6F09 (talk) 18:46, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

6F09, thank you for discussing. It is hard to explain things to rapidly-editing IPs with constantly-shifting addresses, especially in the tight space of an edit comment. I could also mention that it is strictly forbidden to make remarks of any kind about other editors here on Wikipedia. However, I'd first echo the words of the proverb, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", which apply perfectly to the original text. That text accurately and correctly paraphrased rather than repeated the Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey's comment that there was no fit at all between the Edwardian Shire and the older world of Dwarves and Elves, by saying they were incompatible. Your attempt to fix it used two complex phrases "stands at odds" and "ventures into.", both of which could easily give trouble to many readers. In short, it was better as it was.
