Suggestions for Article Improvement[edit]

This article is a good brief overview of Big Mound Key but there are several areas in which it could be improved. The article title includes Boggess Ridge as well as Big Mound Key yet the entire article focuses on Big Mound key with no mention of Boggess Ridge or Boggess Hole. Information should be added that addresses Boggess Ridge and explains the relationship between Boggess Ridge and Big Mound. The article states that the land was purchased by the state of Florida in 1978; however, no mention is made of who owned the land or how it was used prior to 1978. There is also lacking information about the major looting incident in 1981 and the steps that were taken to protect the site following this incident. The article mentions that George Luer led an extensive excavation of the site between 2008 and 2011 but there is no follow up that explains his findings or conclusions. There is limited information concerning the people who may have inhabited this site. There is also no effort to describe Big Mound Key and Boggess Ridge in the context of the peoples that inhabited the area but rather the article focuses on the modern context of the site. Modern place names are used to describe locations related to the site, rather than names that were used by the peoples who inhabited the area. Much of the information on the history of the site focuses on modern times rather than the 2,000 years of occupation of Big Mound. There is also no information on what happened to the people who inhabited this site, where they went, how late it was occupied, etc. Additional sources that could be useful include The Archaeology of Upper Charlotte Harbor, Florida published by the Florida Anthropological Society as well as Big Mound Key Near Charlotte Harbor, Florida also published by the Florida Anthropological Society.
