Mitts[edit]

Six finger glove[edit]

-- Generally, the "6th finger" is the webbing. However, ambidextrous Greg Harris had a special six-fingered pitcher's glove made up for him. no fingers in first baseman's mitts?[edit]

I was under the impression that Catchers and then first baseman wore "Mitts"(as in mittens) since they often lacked finger hols and they were early attempts to catch the ball without making full hand contact. They thrown ball in the early days were usually harder than the variable speed from a bat. The mitts have "individual fingers" inside, but the outside is usually a continuous leather piece, not the distinct fingers that fielder's gloves have.—Preceding unsigned comment added by PSzalapski (talk • contribs) 00:48, 9 May 2007
Yes, a quick google search will show you that first basemen's gloves do not have individual fingers on the outside with the exception of the thumb. FEVB (talk) 18:21, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mediocre article. Text states that Doak suggested webbing in 1920, but the pictures of gloves with webbing are from 1906. No information about when or why the "hand"-type gloves typical of the 1910s-1950s evolved into the "scoop"-type gloves common from 1970s-now.97.81.102.44 (talk) 04:34, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball Glove General Critique[edit]

The Wikipedia article on baseball gloves outlines a brief history, the different variations that one comes in, sizing options, and numerous manufacturers of this baseball technology. Overall, this article is very informative, well written, and serves its purpose but there are however a few small improvements that can be made to it.

One imperfection I found with this article is that it does not state who the original inventor of the baseball glove is and this is something very important to have for any Wikipedia article dealing with a technology. Another improvement I would make is to give a picture of all the different types of baseball gloves that exist. There is a significant difference between a catcher’s glove and an infielder’s glove and I think that the reader would definitely benefit from having a visual of this difference rather than just reading about it.

After reviewing all of the sources, references, and external links that the article provided I was left thinking that these were not all legitimate or complete. I was not able to open some of the references, which gave me reason to believe that they are not creditable sources for information. Additionally, none of these sources are from academic journals. Anything that is not a peer reviewed academic document is not authoritative for me because literally anyone could have written them. This is definitely an area of the article that needs to be looked at and worked on if it wants to be a respectable Wikipedia article.

Other than the suggestion that I made above regarding the various types of baseball gloves, the article did a good job of exemplifying what a baseball glove looks like. The article also shows some very old baseball gloves from 1885 as well as an old baseball glove advertisement from 1905, which I found to be very interesting and useful.

For the most part, the article covers the technology of baseball gloves thoroughly and a reader will walk away with an extensive understanding of this topic after going through it. The beginning of the article gives a brief definition that clearly sums up exactly what a baseball glove is, when it is used, and who uses it. This definition is essential to know if you are going to continue reading the article and is beneficial to someone who has no idea what a baseball glove is. Furthermore, the article goes into detail about the history of the baseball glove, which depicts everything from the time that gloves were not used in baseball to advancements that glove manufacturers look to make in the future. Like I stated in the beginning of this critique, the only thing that could have been improved in this section is the author should have included the original inventor of the baseball glove. The end of the article consists of detailed sections that include baseball glove varieties (catcher’s glove, first basemen glove, etc.), sizing, and glove manufacturers, which were all well written.

The article is not flawed by any frivolous or spurious contributions and every section that is included serves a purpose. All of the sections are useful and needed to fully explain the technology of the baseball glove. One can argue that the major glove manufacturers section is a bit spurious because not all of the manufacturers listed are “major” ones anymore. Glove manufacturers like Hillerich & Bradsby, Vinci Co. LLC, and Spalding may have been popular many years ago, but the current generation of baseball players no longer uses these brands gloves.

When I compared this article to a Britannia Encyclopedia article on baseball gloves I found that the Wikipedia article was much more detailed and valuable. One minor thing that I liked that the encyclopedia article did however was that they gave restrictions on how large a baseball glove can be and the Wikipedia article did not.
