Cooperation with Øystein Sunde

I don't know where to put it, but Fleck appeared on norwegian singer Øystein Sunde's 1989 record "Kjekt å ha", together with many other bluegrass heros. The only sources I can find are in Norwegian, like this: [1]. At least the lists of musicians are useful to you. Discography

I added a partial discography -- it seemed as though one was in order -- but I'm not wedded to the format of it at this point if other people think it would be better to organize on a strictly chronological (or alphabetical or something else...) basis. This section could use some more cleanup, especially for consistency (record label names, etc). I like the organization by who he played with, but maybe it would be a good idea to take most of the minor collaborations and put them under a single heading. Hi. I don't know if you're looking for something more extensive than collaboration on a single song when you add an entry to the "with other artists" section of the discography, but he did a song with dobro and mandolin-extraordinaires Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush (respectively) called "Who's Your Uncle" for Douglas' 2005 album _The Best Kept Secret_. I'm in no position to make this change, but it's easily verified. Fleck recently appeared on pianist McCoy Tyner's new album, Guitars (McCoy Tyner album). The page about the album states: "Guitars is an album by McCoy Tyner released on his McCoy Tyner Music (a subsiduary of Half Note Records) label in 2008. It was recorded in Setember 2007 and features performances by Tyner, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette with Marc Ribot, John Scofield, Béla Fleck, Derek Trucks, and Bill Frisell." I know it's easier to complain from outside, but the Discography section really is sloppy now. Someone should pick a method in which to list Fleck's contributions and recordings and please stick to it. I'm dizzy from looking at the article as it is, and truly, it gives no real hint as to the depth and breadth of what he plays, in particular, on the banjo, which until recent time, (possibly because of him almost entirely?) hasn't been considered an instrument used in recording genres like jazz, or, as was pointed out, alternative rock music, in the case of the Dave Matthews Band. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:01, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

I just thought I would add Fleck's appearance on stage with Rory Gallagher at Monteaux in 1994. A medley of Amazing Grace - Walkin' Blues - Blue Moon of Kentucky. Blew my socks off. I don't even know where to put this... but doesn't she speak Chinese and have some sort of Chinese connection? Status as a virtuoso

I feel as though it must be mentioned that he has been called a virtuoso from many, many sources. Does anyone else agree with me? I feel that that fact just goes to show what an accomplished musician he really is, even more so than such things as Grammy awards. It could be cited from numerous sources.

Also, I know the Grammy nominations were mentioned, but a lot of his collaborations are not--And when I say that, I'm talking about mostly world music. He's used the banjo in many genres and settings that have never had a banjo touch them--I don't really get that vibe from the article (of course the classical projects are mentioned, but the simple fact that he's playing jazz banjo isn't even highlighted, it seems).

I agree with CoffeeJanitor. His being a true pioneer of the instrument is more important than his Grammy awards. The lead paragraph merely cites Fleck as "innovative and technically proficient." This is, by any fair standard, a great understatement. Fleck is a virtuoso and true pioneer of the banjo instrument's sonic potential. Though rooted deeply in the style of bluegrass he brought the instrument into the world of jazz as well as various world music genres. There is no living banjo player as talented and that has done more as an international ambassador of the instrument. The lead paragraph really does need some expansion and beefing up. He is internationally recognized and is in high demand at bluegrass and jazz festivals throughout the world.
