foederatus[edit]

A citation is needed for the status of the Helvetii as foederatus. Caesar says he assigned them to the Allobroges as a client state; don't know what this would mean about whether or not they could be considered a technically independent ally of Rome, but it seems unlikely — Rome had a long history of enmity with the Helvetii, as they were among the few Celtic polities to support the Cimbri in their invasions during the last decade of the 100s (in contrast, say, to the Sequani, who resisted the Cimbri in cooperation with Rome). The Helvetii were the last Celtic polity to defeat the Romans before Caesar's war; they marched a Roman army under the yoke, and in Rome Caesar was probably criticized for his clemency toward them (yes, clemency, contrary to most modern perceptions) because he sent those who survived the war home to rebuild Helvetia instead of selling them all into slavery, which would've been a perfectly acceptable and expected thing to do in ancient warfare. Sending them home was likely intended to be a defense against Ariovistus rather than pure kindness, but still — if I were a Helvetian, I'd think that going home and rebuilding was a hell of lot better than being sold into slavery. After all, they recovered enough to join the pan-Gallic rebellion of 52 BC. Cynwolfe (talk) 13:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
