Semi-protected edit request on 13 July 2014

Ansel Elgort has requested that his modeling "career" be taken down from his Wikipedia page. He has stated that he is not in fact a model, and wishes not to be referred to as such. I would like permission to remove this information about him, under his request. For evdience that he wishes for it to be taken down, please see his tweets on Twitter, posted on the 12th of July, 2014.

ElleBird (talk) 16:11, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Not done What Elgort "wants" is totally immaterial, this is not "his" page, it is a Wikipedia page about him.
It currently includes several statements referring to his modeling, which appear to be based on reliable sources, so there is no obvious reason to remove them. If you can prove (by using reliable sources) that the sources quoted are incorrect, we may remove them, or may use your sources to show that there is a dispute about the point.
Please note that Wikipedia's definition of reliable sources excludes anything issued by Elgort, his agency, PR company, fan-club, or anything else related to him, in any way, as reliable sources need to be independent.
Equally; Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites, or anything based on public contributions, including Wikipedia, are unacceptable, as they are not reliable. - Arjayay (talk) 16:27, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't see a single reliable source calling him a professional model. Can you point to one, Arjayay? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:04, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Is he a model?

What do reliable sources say? --Malerooster (talk) 18:06, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

It doesn't look like a modeling career to me, just a couple of promotional photo shoots. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:06, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
It's common for up and coming actors to do fashion and promotional photo shoots to get their faces around, or to entice advertisers to use them as "faces" of their products. Clive Owen and Daniel Craig were plastered across every high fashion mag there was on their way up. It's PR, not professional modeling. [removed per BLP] --Drmargi (talk) 20:05, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
@Drmargi, please keep comments to how to improve the article rather than speculating about the subject's motivations, thank you, --Malerooster (talk) 18:54, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
The section has now been re-added by user:Arjayay. I am aware of the thread at ANI and in fact I arrived at the article in response to that thread. I don't believe we should be obliged to keep this content that's not supported by the sources merely because the subject of the article wishes it to be removed. I think it needs to come out. What's the consensus here? -- Diannaa (talk) 18:45, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Again, do RS call him a model? As it is currently written and sourced, I would leave it out as well, for now. The consensus seems to be for exclusion, but that can of course change. --Malerooster (talk) 18:53, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Let's look at the sources currently in the article:
*This article is a fashion spread in the July issue of GQ Magazine. This is modelling.
*This article shows he did a self-promotional calendar (not a modelling job)
*This piece in Teen Vogue shows him as one of several young talents in a feature (not a modelling job)
*This article in Flaunt does not mention modelling at all
*This piece from 17 Magazine: not a modelling job; a promotional featurette
*This photo spread in Elle: could be construed as a modelling job
*This interview in Interview Magazine; does not mention modelling. Given these sources, I would say he has not been pursuing modelling as a career. My opinion is that the material should come out or should be re-worded so that we don't call him a model. -- Diannaa (talk) 22:54, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Would an admin please remove

  • The claim that he is a model or has a modelling career, per WP:BLP "Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." (My bolding.) No credible source describes him as a model.
  • All references to photo shoots per WP:DUE - it's trivia. --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 03:40, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Removal of model occupation

Hi,

So people who are removing this have somewhere to gain consensus I'll start the section myself.

Should we remove the model occupation as per the articles namesakes request.

  • Oppose the section on modelling is sourced and referenced. We shouldn't be removing information from an article on the request of the person the article is about. If we do this we will have issues maintaining a WP:NPOV on articles as we could have anyone requesting we remove anyhting about them they disagree with. Amortias (T)(C) 20:26, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

See section Talk:Ansel Elgort#Is he a model? above. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 21:17, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Support removal of model occupation. The five references to fashion magazines and sites that Amortias claims show that he is a model actually describe him, consistently, as an actor with a lead role in the upcoming "Carrie" remake. Not a single one includes text describing him as a professional model. One shows him with a young woman described as a model, but that word is not applied to him. Some mention his ballet training and DJ activities. Not every person whose photo appears in a fashion magazine is a model by occupation, in the professional sense. No evidence has been provided that he is signed with a modeling agency. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:59, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Support remove all mention of modeling--Malerooster (talk) 02:50, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Support removal. Many actors (especially female) appear in fashion shoots. We need sources describing him as a model. --NeilN talk to me 03:40, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Alright, this seems clear enough. I see no point waiting any longer, esp. since, as Cullen argues, there seems to be no evidence whatsoever for calling the guy a "model", despite some photo shoots: actors always do photo shoots. Now, I've reverted the last addition of this "model" thing, and will unprotect the article (thanks Ymblanter for the protection), and I urge editors to edit this article in accordance with our BLP policy and what the sources say. As a side note, can we try and not be pricks to our readers and subjects when it comes to valid BLP complaints? Thank you. Drmies (talk) 04:16, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Protection removed. Further edit warring will be met with blocks. Drmies (talk) 04:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Protected edit request on 14 July 2014

I would like for an administrator to remove the occupation "model" from this page as Ansel has said before, via twitter, that "just because I've done photo shoots for acting like any other actor. doesn't make me a model." He himself has requested that this be removed from his page. Please, please, please be so kind as to consider and hopefully act on this request Mahinz14 (talk) 02:58, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

This has now been  Done following various discussions above. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 07:09, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Hobbits

Should Elgort's interest in hobbits be mentioned in the article? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:33, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

I think that it is trivial and commonplace for Western teenage males to build models based on works of fantasy and science fiction. It is just a passing mention. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:42, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

The next IP that makes an edit request should have a needle stuck in his or her eye

Support - Seriously, there are enough eyes here and hopefully the "right" thing will be done. --Malerooster (talk) 02:48, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Oppose Not a single reliable source calls him a professional model; a handsome young actor promoting a film role by posing for fashion magazine photo shoots does not become a professional model by doing so; it is possible for IP editors to be right; in this case they are; and there is nothing inappropriate or surprising that a BLP subject will try to change inaccurate information. There is no justification for full protection of this article, or for jesting threats. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:54, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Cullen328, there are 17!!! edit requests on this page!! WTF!! that is what I was talking about, and kidding to, which I usually don't do, and I guess I shouldn't based on you actually responding. I was kidding!! --Malerooster (talk) 03:16, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
ps, I AGREE with you that he shouldn't be called a model!! Where is that face to palm image when you need it. Cheers, --Malerooster (talk) 03:18, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Malerooster, the edit requests are the entirely proper method for new editors to point out problems with the article, which still erroneously calls him a professional model. Kidding is fine in your living room or with Facebook buddies but not on a contentious BLP talk page. Full protection of this page is wrong. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:30, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
You are f&^king kidding me, right? Actually, based on your past responses, I guess you aren't. When I see 17 edit requests in 2 days by IPs, brand new editors, and my monkeys uncle, I usually scratch my head and say WTF is going on here. That's just me. I will try not to kid around going forward. And I still agree with you on all points including not protecting this article. Good night. --Malerooster (talk) 03:39, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
When your monkey's uncle makes an edit request which is correct and proper, then your monkey's uncle's edit request should be carried out promptly without mockery or misplaced outrage. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:51, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
misplaced outrage?!? don't look now, but the article has been protected AGAIN!!! Now what?--Malerooster (talk) 00:50, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Gee, I guess we might just have to discuss it on the talk page for a while instead, eh? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:58, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
(Although last time I looked it was only semi protected anyway.) --Demiurge1000 (talk) 22:59, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Girlfriend

Is it really notable that Elgort dated his highschool sweetheart, considering she in and of herself is not notable? This seems rather trivial to me. Please discuss. --Ebyabe talk - General Health ‖ 14:05, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

"Controversy" section

This section has recently been removed and reinstated several times. I have now removed it again, per WP:BLP and because Wikipedia is not a tabloid. The section is not in fact about any controversy; it ought rather to be named "Things said by people who dislike AE". It's sourced, yes (sourced to BuzzFeed, something called Complex and people.com), but it's pure WP:ATTACK and WP:UNDUE. There is one good source offered in the section, namely Elle. The article from Elle is a positive, rather anodyne, interview without any of the nastiness of the other sources; but in our article, it's used exclusively for quotations by the subject, misleadingly taken out of context, such as "LaGuardia is a wonderful, wonderful place. If you're like me and you love dancers, you just have to walk up to the eighth floor and you can get one." When the interviewer, who apparently lacks the lewd mindset implied by the way the quote is used in the article, asks if he means like adopting a puppy, he says "[Laughs] That's a terrible way of saying it! No, you can just go up there and try to flirt." The whole section is put together in a very mean way. Not everything that's sourced belongs in a BLP. I have removed it per WP:BLP: "Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives; the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment.". Please don't put it back. Take it to the BLP noticeboard if you like, but while any discussion takes place, it needs to stay out. Bishonen | talk 11:44, 30 June 2017 (UTC).

Ansel has requested to have the picture changed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jessrawrsatchu (talkcontribs) 23:19, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Jessrawrsatchu. We can only use a photo which has been released under an acceptable Creative Commons license by the copyright holder. The current photo is the only high quality portrait of Elgort at Wikimedia Commons. The others are photos of him with other people, as you can see at his category page on Wikimedia Commons. If a better, more recent photo is uploaded with an acceptable free license, we can consider changing it. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:51, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

How to change the picture

Various news stories are reporting that this person asked the public to change their picture on Wikipedia.

Please note that Wikipedia is a free resource, and the images in Wikipedia must be free for anyone to reuse. If anyone wants the picture changed, please identify a free, donated picture that has an appropriate copyright release for Wikipedia to reuse. Typically this means having a photographer make a photo donation to Wikipedia. Here is the upload form. If you took a photo yourself, and own the copyright, then create a Wikipedia account and donate your photo here -

Right now, here are all the free photos of this person which anyone has been able to identify anywhere on the Internet.

If you are responding to this person's request to change their photo, then please contact the person back, and tell them to have their publicist make a photo donation to Wikipedia. The copyright to good photos is extremely expensive - perhaps hundreds or thousands of dollars - and Wikipedia has no budget to purchase these things. If you ask anyone for photos, also ask them to spread the word to every celebrity and public figure they know to also donate pictures. More photo donations are requested! Wikipedia can only be as good as the content which is donated to it. Please donate more photos to Wikipedia. Please ask every celebrity in the world to have their publicist donate pictures to Wikipedia, and to do it legally with permission from the photographer. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:19, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Just want to note that I have reached out to Ansel directly with regards to changing the picture. Hopefully I can get something suitable shortly. Tabercil (talk) 22:05, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

I have to agree with Blue Rasberry, but let me directly address Ansel. If you don't like your photo here, take a picture yourself and upload it and freely license it. If you can't take a photo yourself, contact a photographer (duh!) and tell him that he should freely license it and upload it to Wikimedia Commons. If you can't find a photographer who will do this, contact your agent. If your agent can't figure out how to do this, fire him! Any questions? Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:31, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Update on change of picture

Exactly one year has passed since colleague User talk:Smallbones's comment and still the Ansel Elgort photo (so much hated by the actor) stays intact. I find Smallbones suggestions to Elgort so solid and to the point. I know Elgort is extremely busy promoting the film Baby Driver where he is a lead actor. It is a brilliant film and he deservedly shines in it. So the Wikipedia photo may be now the last thing in his mind or on his list of priorities.... But due to the huge interest in him as an actor because of this movie and due to so many more people visiting the Wikipedia page, I am sure he can spare 10-15 minutes and provide himself a free photo that he really likes for once.... so that readers can see an amended photo which is more representative of him. If not, then we are stuck with this "hated" picture for some more time. But I do understand his pickiness about photos though. His father Arthur Elgort is a renowned fashion photographer. Perhaps Mr. Arthur Elgort could personally get a photo of his son Ansel and freely licence it to Wikipedia. Just one photo and all this acrimonious tit-for-tat argument between Ansel and Wikipedia is over in an instant. werldwayd (talk) 17:20, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

May I express my great joy in Wikipedia getting rid of the so-called controversial photo in favor of a new one which may actually gain Ansel Elgort's approval at last. Me I love the new photo. I have also spent some good time visiting all the Wikipedia language pages and replacing the old offending photo [1] with the new one [2] . By the way how cool this guy is in his lead role in Baby Driver! werldwayd (talk) 20:31, 26 July 2017 (UTC) werldwayd (talk) 21:10, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Elgort hasn't been accused by multiple people of sexual assault. That's a lie. It should also mention the year of the incident and his age at the time. This place is turning into a mess. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.146.152.215 (talk) 10:20, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

I agree that the article did not correctly summarise the sources and so have removed the paragraph. I'm also not at all sure that the sources being used meet the instruction that If you cannot find multiple reliable third-party sources documenting the allegation or incident, leave it out. from WP:BLP. Thanks for reporting this. Wham2001 (talk) 10:46, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

This is ridiculous. It’s an allegation that he himself addressed with the obligatory notes app apology, ostensibly written at the behest of his lawyer. Removing it when 110,000 people came here looking for answers is revisionism and just plain dirty. This is not tabloid fodder, even a respectable institution like Newsweek reported on it. The “multiple women” part does not have evidence. Trillfendi (talk) 21:15, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

Given that there does not seem to be any actual evidence, and due to there being no additional movement in terms of a investigation / further allegations put forth after all this time, I could see the argument that this fact should now be removed. It really is just tabloid gossip at this point in time. An unverified Twitter user has tweeted something and a tabloid has reported on it. Hardly Wikipedia worthy. At minimum it should just be rolled into the personal life section. One sentence, that has no real supporting information behind it, should not be given a new section / sub-section in my opinion.
