PDM888[edit]

This automated bot "ChrissyMad" has just ruined several days work, updating a wikipedia on Allan Peiper. I have spent considerable time working upon. I wrote the out of date, and poorly crafted "archive" that has been replaced. Why?? It's not as good as the detail and work I was currently crafting, and completing daily, since January 1st 2018.

@PDM888: ChrissyMad is not a bot, but an actual Wikipedia editor, like yourself. While the present state of the article may not be perfect, the changes you added were far worse, using exceedingly non-neutral language in what appeared to be more of an ad for Peiper than an encyclopedia article about him. Chrissy rightfully reverted these edits. Your last attempt, using a bunch of generic placeholder text, seemed to be just an angry reaction to being once again reverted. I recommend that you discuss the changes you'd like to see here, on this talk page, and let's see if we can sort this out. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:04, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
User:WikiDan61, I agree. Drmies (talk) 17:05, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Drmies - whatpurpose does leaving the pettiness encountered, on a talk page? PDM888 (talk) 19:17, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all. Just a note to say, that when I've added race details, under the heading "race notes" I have sometimes added a time deficit (if applicable) to the relevant race. I type "+ minutes seconds" etc. The universal way to state this (amongst cyclists) is "1'33" indicating 1 min 33sconds down" but I have kept the original way, as I felt it was easier for everybody (not necessarily cyclists) to understand. Due to the sheer number of races, I also felt a collapsible text box, was the best option.

I do have a general question, for anyone with more experience. Is it acceptable to add a link for video footage and use as a reference? It does not necessarily mean youtube, however, it's something I have often wondered. ie The 100m final in Seoul 1988 Olympics. The film of that race, would perhaps be a worthwhile addition ? as an example? Though, I'm aware of the commercial adverts, and negatives. PDM888 (talk) 11:31, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@PDM888: A video of a race might be a useful or interesting external link, but it would not serve as a valid citation unless the narration of the video verified the fact in question. If the user needs to interpret the video in order to verify the fact, that would be unsuitable, and we would prefer a report (printed, electronic, video or audio) where a third party had already interpreted the video to provide the analysis needed to verify the fact. I have found that many of the cycle races (held overseas) I am looking for details, often have wiki pages, but in the native languages. Is that acceptable, to use as a reference (validating detail)? I also find that many of the races, that are named after regions elsewhere, often, do not have English language pages, in that scenario, I just follow the | name the place | rather than ''validate the place with this link''.

Re above reply to video - short film, with cycle race result (usually a short clip - often in dutch, italian, or french, sometimes, English) shall i try and add one (a video link relevant, for scrutiny) and see what the consensous is on here? PDM888 (talk) 17:09, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@PDM888: No, you can't use other Wikipedia pages (in any language) as sources because Wikipedia allows anyone to edit with insufficient editorial oversight. However, if the info in the foreign language Wikipedias has its own valid citation, you can just cite the same source. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:17, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone updating the page "Allan Peiper" if appropriate, thank you. Help, is always appreciated. Recent edits by others, have changed his name spelling, or relevant years. For clarity, his name is spelt "Allan" and not Alan. His surname is spelt "Peiper" and not Piper. His correct birthdate is 26th of April 1960 - 26.04.1960. Other notes, when I've added race details, or results, I have often left Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). sections blank, for updating when I have found a more accurate online reference link. I use a combination of result year books, and foreign language cycling result websites. It is difficult to verify much, in this time period (1972-1992) as it predates computers, and results were often simply in newspapers, or typed results, start lists, back then. Happy Editing :-) PDM888 (talk) 11:14, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
