I wonder whether anyone has a better reference for this Alan Bates quote, one of the last he made of any note: "People think it's better my side of the street, but it isn't really." It is probably from a short piece he appeared in, in an ITV Evening News "soft news" piece a few months before he died. Date of Death[edit]

The official memorial website (http://www.alanbates.com/) shows his date of death as 27 December. I am going to change the article accordingly.--ukexpat (talk) 22:31, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no mention of Oliver's Travels[edit]

I noticed there is no mention of Bate's lead in Oliver's Travels which has a wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver%27s_Travels I leave it to someone more familiar with the format of such articles to add it.

Wife's Cause of Death[edit]

This is listed as a "wasting disease", but her own Wikipedia article says she died from a heart attack. The source given only provides date of death, not cause. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.216.165.29 (talk) 15:00, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I noticed this straight away, but no one seems to have dealt with. Did she die from a heart attack or a wasting disease? What IS a "wasting disease" anyway?Barmispain (talk) 21:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject LGBT studies[edit]

Why? He's not in any LGBT collections.. --24.20.129.18 (talk) 07:29, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing in the article to say he took it up the arse. Once again, the queers are using Queeripedia to publish lies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.96.111.64 (talk) 21:44, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's widely documented that he had a sexual relationship with Peter Wyngarde lasting 10 years, and with John Curry lasting 2 years until Curry's death from AIDS. See the refs in those articles. 217.155.20.163 (talk) 22:46, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the above is correct and there is a verifiable source (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-455884/Alan-Batess-secret-gay-affair-ice-skater-John-Curry.html), Bates should be included in the appropriate category, as are all other gay actors.Barmispain (talk) 21:21, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Kerching! Another one taken for the queers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.200.151.127 (talk) 10:44, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is disputed whether Alan Bates and Peter Wyngarde were romantically involved because of claims made about the reliability of Donald Spoto's biography; the main source it appears for the assertion. I removed a direct mention from this article earlier today for this reason. Please keep a watch on the Wyngarde article to see if this issue is ever properly resolved. Philip Cross (talk) 18:20, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A single source cannot be used to decide a actors sexuality. The reference to Alan Bates sexuality is therefore untrustworthy. Andrew Dock 65 (talk) 23:37, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

short story[edit]

Alan Bates won a ten-guinea prize for his short story 'No man's Land' published in Kolokon, Volume 1 No 3. Winter 1966. (At the time, Kolokon received financial assitance from the North Eastern Association for the Art). I can't give any citations for this - but I do possess a copy of the magazine! I don't know whether this is relevant to the article or not - that's why I have mentioned it here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gramorak (talkcontribs) 18:03, 27 September 2011 (UTC) sorry, forgot to sign Gramorak (talk 20:29, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Running Man[edit]

As I recall, this is a decent movie in which Bates is good, but is the amount of space currently given to it disproportionate? It's not one of his more famous roles. Per$1$tenceofv1$1on (talk) 01:55, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Per$1$tenceofv1$1on[reply]
