Explaining the phenomena[edit]

Does anyone have any research that offers an explanation for why these -aiden sounding names are so absurdly popular?

I know that Parents.com has offered one theory. They state that the name Aiden was:

"made famous by the character Aidan Shaw, played by actor Josh Corbett, who was the boyfriend of Carrie Bradshaw in the TV show Sex and the City. A form of the name Aodan. Used (sic.) by several early Irish saints. Irish American actor Aidan Quinn has brought attention to the name."

Whether or not this is true, it seems that they are just speculating here. Also, I think the trend in America has become to use increasingly non-traditional names. Can anyone source me on that? Maybe this relates to the role of history and cultural identity in American culture? Furthermore, and this is just a thought, but does this name and others like it reflect a psychosocial shift or some kind of reconfiguration of aesthetic preferences in modernity. The name has been described as 'soft', by George Carlin, which has implications for changes in gender identity in American Society. Boys' name or girls' name?[edit]

Although I far prefer the masculine usage, Aidan and variants are becoming more commonplace as female names. Several leading baby-name books list Aidan as a boys' or girls' name. In my professional life I have come across the name used as a girl's name. There is a female character called Aiden Burn in the popular crime drama CSI:NY.

I haven't included Aiden Burn as a link here because I think the disambiguation page should only refer to the spelling Aidan. On that subject, why was Aidan Keane's link deleted? It is now restored. Preacherdoc 21:24, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In contradiction of my above assertion, it would seem I am dead wrong. Aidan and its variants do not appear in the top 1000 names for girls since the year 2000, according to the United States Social Security Database. What are most definitely present, for both sexes, are alliterative variants, such as Braden, Caden, Jaden, and so on (sometimes with very creative spellings), but these belong on other pages.

Aidan is a boys name. The female version of this name is spelled Aiden, like the charecter in CSI:NY. If you spell the name Aidan then it is always masculine.

Aidan is definitely used as a boy's name far more often. I have never even heard of it used for a girl (in real life, nevermind the CSI episode previously mentioned). My name is Aidan, and it's from my dad's side, which is Irish. Aidan means "little fire" or "ember" in Irish Gaelic. Although this is not really solid factual evidence, I think it is safe to say that although some girls have used it, it is predominantly a boys name, probably because of it's meaning, which I would assume is a meaning associated with masculinity, for the majority of times, in our culture today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.237.132.52 (talk) 02:17, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Limit to Aidan?[edit]

Over the last few weeks a few links to people with the spelling Aiden have crept in. My initial inclination (as per my posting above) is to remove these. However, the spelling Aiden is popular, easily confused with Aidan, and there is (as yet) nowhere for people with the spelling Aiden to reside. The Wikilink Aiden links to the rock band of that name. For the moment, then, Aidens can stay, although ideally Aiden should have its own disambiguation page for that spelling.
