Does South Ossetia issue it's own passports as well ? Passportguy (talk) 14:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Passport" versus "ID card"[edit]

The article is misleading to the max for an Engligh speaker. It uses the English word "passport" without any clarification. Thus the general reader would assume the talk is about an international travel document. Which these are anything but. (!)

Even the "soviet passport" is confusing as it comes from a literal transliteration of "Паспорт" which (used without an adjective) is the name an -internal- ID card in the Soviet Union with no (international) travel meaning.

So this whole article is, in effect, about -internal- ID cards of Abkhazia. Thus effectively proofs of citizenship and hence the related elections related notes.

It then gets complicated, as these were/are indeed accepted "internationally" in Russia and most of CIS thanks to the agreements in the post-soviet space that these internal soviet "Паспорт" documents are recognized for CIS visa-free travel.

That does not change their legal status being equivalenbt to the various ID cards of EU citizens - these also allow travel around the EU but are NOT valid outside the Schengen area (bar special agreements). Very similar like the Abkhazian "Паспорт" works.

Then it gets more complicated by Abkazia not issuing dedicated "international/travel" passports at all and the Russian (international) passport serves their purpose in practice as Russia has very liberal rules for citizenship of inhabitants of the former Soviet Union. This is so as it would be impractical and pointless to issue Abkhazian "international" passports given how little countries would recognize it.

The article need a complete rewrite and, possibly, move to something along "ID card (Abkhazia)" with the "Abkhazian passport" key redirecting to it.83.240.61.187 (talk) 14:53, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
