Original play[edit]

Could someone be able to write any info about the original play, and why it was deemed so scandalous as deliberate censorship would be necessary? 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 20:42, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Arlen wrote the play in 1925 after the huge success of the novel in 1924. He changed character names but retained most of the meat of the book (basically a short story expanded to 300 pages by his period prose and observations of the life in Mayfair in the 1920's). The play (starring Katherine Cornell and Leslie Howard) was not nearly as well-received in the United States and was part of the reason (censorship being the other) the film script was altered even more. I've made a few adjustments to the lede of the article.--Reedmalloy (talk) 00:44, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
