Blank Ballots and Vote Share[edit]

New York State releases blank and void ballots, however, when calculating the final share of vote for each candidate, they subtract those blank and void ballots from the total. For instance in the 2020 primary, with void and blank ballots included, Biden got 64.6% of the vote. On the New York Board of Elections however, they calculated that he got 70.2% of the vote since they removed blank and void ballots when calculating the share. (Click percent below the map)

There's a little inconsistency on Wikipedia for the 2020 New York primary and 2020 general election. Blank/void ballots aren't included in the general election article which would have reduced Biden's share from 60.9% to 60.4% if included. More importantly, in official FEC reports, they don't include these blank/void ballots when calculating share. They do count uncommitted/write-ins for states allowing. (Page 64 of PDF)

Should we follow what we did with the 2020 primary by including the void/blanks in calculating vote share or be consistent with what we do when calculating general election shares?

To me it seems completely unreasonable to count void ballots in the share like what was done for the 2020 primary. How blank ballots are treated is inconsistent but open to discussion. XDestroyer354 (talk) 17:54, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: For the 2020 presidential primary, there seems to be a mistake with the blanks if you pay attention to Suffolk County, so in reality blanks were less than 80k statewide. XDestroyer354 (talk) 00:22, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
