Association for Iona prior to 1977[edit]

Cbl62, Iona football was not an NCAA member prior to 1978. I spoke with Tony DeMeo on the phone back in 2019, related to edits he and I were making to the article about him. I was describing his teams from 1975 to 1977 as "club", but he said that wasn't an accurate description even though they were not an NCAA member. I think this had something to do with NCAA regulations at the time, which didn't allow a school that competed at the Division I level in some sports to complete at the D3 level in others. I believe this was changed in 1978, allowing schools like Iowa, St. John's, and Marist to play NCAA D3 football while playing DI in basketball and other sports.

I found this clipping from November 1977, which lists Iona in the top ten rankings of the "National Collegiate Assn." Jweiss11 (talk) 18:30, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
