Comment

It surprises me that with the huge number of pages dedicated to this very show, its primary article, The Simpsons is not a FA. It was peer reviewed once (with only one [fixed] comment), and I'd like to see it be reviewed a second time. Anyone agreeing with me, please drop me a line on my talk page (as I won't be in that much), or on this page, or go ahead and re-nominate it. It seems well-written, with good rationale for everything, and I believe it's FA quality stuff. -[[User:Mysekurity|Mysekurity]] [[additions | e-mail]] 03:44, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

What is FA? Soccer? Umm, yes!, the page isn't updating and I think that's a shame. NorwegianMarcus 08:08, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
PS! The norwegian portal is better. Seriously, update this portal, and make the colors red/yellow(blue) and have the logo there. NorwegianMarcus 13:58, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

What could be better

I really think The Simpsons is very well covered here. MAny things are good, but the portal is not very good.
The portal should be more red, and have some more pictures. I think you all should see how I did it on the norwegian WP. There, we are not allowed using any pictures, which is tough for me as an editor. Also, you guys are my idols and I try do it as well as you. NorwegianMarcus 12:43, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Page not updating

The changes that I made to the sections linking to this portal are not appearing on the main page of the portal. JarlaxleArtemis 08:11, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

A Fish Called Selma

Just wondering why only one ep from Season 7 lacks an entry. Perhaps acccidental deletion or something? Just asking after I referenced Troy Mcclure's DMC-12 on that car's entry....BabuBhatt 22:39, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Added to Portal:The Simpsons/Things you can do, feel free to do that in the future! —Fitch 01:36, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Pictures

I just wanted to know why there is an absence of pictures in this portal. I thought maybe about fair use policy and whatnot, but Portal:Futurama has a bunch that are fair use. Is there a reason that there are no pictures in this portal? --WillMak050389 04:03, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

They are not allowed per WP:FU. I have just removed the images from the Futurama portal. Kusma (討論) 15:37, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Quotes

I was looking at the Norwegian portal and I noticed that they have a quotes section and I was thinking that maybe we should do the same. Thoughts? -- Scorpion 19:00, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I'd have no objections. Gran2 19:11, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Expansion on Trilogy of Error

I suggest someone fix up The Simpsons Episode: Trilogy of Error; similar to Homer's Phobia, as it is widely considered one of the best episodes on the series so far.
Taipan198 04:23, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Nobody is stopping you... It would be difficult to do so because there is currently little production info as the season 12 DVD set is at least a year away. -- Scorpion0422 04:38, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

The road to featured portal status

This portal is pretty comprehensive. With a bit of work, I don't think it would take too long to get it up to WP:FPORTC, and pass through to be a WP:FPORT. If it were up to me, I'd start by getting rid of the idea of having one article/bio/etc. be selected for a period of time, and instead have a bunch (10 or more) that are randomly filtered through, by using {{Random portal component}}. Portal:Sustainable development is a good example of this in action. Cirt 18:40, 2 December 2007 (UTC).

Self sustaining portals isn't among the FP criteria though. -- Scorpion0422 20:56, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps not, but it is easier to manage if everything is randomized. Then all you have to do is add new material, which then subsequently also gets randomized. It works for Portal:Sustainable development and other featured portals. Let me know if you'd like to get this portal to featured status, I might have some time to help out. Cirt 01:44, 3 December 2007 (UTC).
Randomization
  • If we were to use {{Random portal component}}, the text of {{Simpsonsportalepisode date}} could be changed to more simply say that the article is a Selected article at The Simpsons Portal, as opposed to specific dates. Or, we could specify the date it was added to the pool of selected articles. Really it wouldn't take me too long to add subpages and randomize the portal. I see you have a list of older selected articles so subpages for them could be created relatively quickly. Then it would only be a matter of standardizing the amount of text in each "blurb". Cirt (talk) 13:00, 5 December 2007 (UTC).
I think that randomized text is a good idea, which should be implemented. It will make the portal less static. --Maitch (talk) 13:14, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I am in the process of getting another Portal up to Featured Portal status, and I would like to do that here. If there are no significant objections, I will start that by implementing some randomizing. Cirt (talk) 19:16, 5 December 2007 (UTC).

Placement on articles

Note: This portal navigation can be placed on articles, and is commonly placed in the See also section of an article on Wikipedia, using the following code:

{{Portal|The Simpsons|Walk of fame - The Simpsons.jpg}}
This displays as:

Cirt (talk).

Most of the episode articles already have the portal, just not the image. -- Scorpion0422 19:17, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I know, I just put it here for posterity, in case anyone wanted it. Alternatively, here is a different version:
{{Portal|The Simpsons|Simpsons tv icon.svg}}
This displays as:

Cirt (talk) 19:19, 5 December 2007 (UTC).

Added

Added Featured content and Associated Wikimedia sections, modeled after Portal:North West England, among other portals. Cirt (talk) 20:54, 5 December 2007 (UTC).

Set-up the Randomization

  • I set up subpages to begin the Randomization process for Selected article, Selected episode, and Did you know.... As there is plenty of quality rated WP:FA and WP:GA content in this project, I don't think it's unreasonable to require that all Selected article and Selected episode pieces showcase the project's best work, and all be FAs or GAs. As for Did you know..., it looks like this project does not have many hooks/DYKs that have actually successfully been featured at T:DYK, so I made this requirement less stringent and simply stated that all "hooks" will require a sourced citation at the hook's subpage to back up the stated fact. Of course, preference should be given to hooks that have already successfully appeared at T:DYK, and so if possible, we should get (10) hooks to go to T:DYK at some point, though this is not necessary because good sourcing on our own and short and sweet hooks would be fine, in the model of T:TDYK.

Cirt (talk) 00:26, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

Did you know...
  • I was gonna say, does the DYK section have to use DYKs that appeared on the main page, but you kinda answered it. Because we could have plenty of DYK type facts from other articles. Gran2 17:09, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
    • Well, we could, but I had it set up so that if the hook had not first appeared as a DYK on the Main Page, that you must provide a citation on the subpage of that DYK to back it up. But I would tend to stick with those that have appeared at the Main Page, because that is sort of defaulting that other editors have vetted it already as well. Cirt (talk) 17:11, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
      • Look at it this way, we already have four randomizing, and with only one fact being displayed at a time, which looks nice and that's already a fair bit of randomization. Then there is another Simpsons related DYK that will hopefully be on the Main Page soon. So if we could get another (5) new articles or stub/expansions to go to T:DYK at some point, that would be ten, which would definitely be sufficient for a Featured Portal candidacy. Unless I missed other Simpsons DYKs that have already appeared at T:DYK in the past? Cirt (talk) 17:19, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

External links in Portal?

I see the Links and News sections both have links to external sites in those sections. I am not 100% sure, but I don't think this will go over too well at WP:FPORTC when the time is ready. I think that, especially for the News section, we should rely on sister projects and the like, for example The Simpsons pages on Wikinews. Cirt (talk) 00:39, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

  • I think the current News section should either be removed, or moved to the associated WikiProject. Then, as per Wikipedia:Portal guidelines, a new In the news section can be added instead, with links to Wikinews. Cirt (talk) 11:15, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
    • I added a link in the News section to The Simpsons pages on Wikinews. As for the Links section, we'll just have to see what folks think when this goes up for Wikipedia:Portal peer review a little bit later on. Cirt (talk) 15:10, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
      • Personally I see nothing wrong with the current news section, as long as its kept updated, although I'd possibly remove the Simpsons Channel link, although it is the best Simpsons news source. I'd probably remove the external links section though. Gran2 17:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
        • Right, that is exactly what I was thinking. No rush, we can wait first to hear from others here on the talk page, and then hear from those who are more of Portal-regulars and not Simpsons-regulars, at the Portal review when the time comes. But I tend to agree with you on this. Cirt (talk) 17:07, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
          • I removed these. I checked this out a little further. SimpsonsWiki.com and Wikisimpsons both seem to simply be mirrored versions of our better version of Simpsons articles here on Wikipedia. And then The Simpsons Archive is the only other external link left - and that is already linked at practically all the Simpsons related articles' individual external link sections. Cirt (talk) 22:02, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

Spacing issues

Spacing issues will even out if we can get every single "blurb" piece from the Selected article and Selected episode sections to have the exact same number of lines. This doesn't have to be 10 lines, but probably should be somewhere around there. Cirt (talk) 11:41, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

"I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove anything!" -- Bart Simpson. In other words, spacing isn't that big of an issue, as long as it isn't extreme. ;-) RichardF (talk) 12:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Cirt (talk) 12:21, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

Feature and Good quality content

I may have said this earlier, but just to reiterate: I think that since The Simpsons WikiProject has a good amount of Feature quality and Good quality content, we should only use Feature or Good quality stuff in the Selected article and Selected episode sections. Cirt (talk) 15:14, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

Selected picture section?

I have been looking over at Wikimedia Commons on The Simpsons and it looks like there are some nice free-use images to choose from. If we can pick out at least (10) varied free-use images from Wikimedia Commons, we could have a nice Selected picture section in the portal, that would also be randomized. Cirt (talk) 00:28, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

  • I'll work on creating a Selected picture section with free-use images. Cirt (talk) 15:10, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
    • I think it's a bad idea, as there are only about a dozen images, and none of them are really that high quality. -- Scorpion0422 15:12, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
      • Okay. I was sort of going either way on this one. It'd be nice though to get some more high-quality images. Something to think about in the future. If we can get at a minimum 10 really nice looking, unique and high-quality images, it'd be something to reconsider. Cirt (talk) 15:15, 6 December 2007 (UTC).
        • I think it'd be a good idea. I made a better catalouge of free use images we have myself here. Quite alot of the images are pretty good quality in my view. Gran2 17:00, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
          • Thanks for showing us that page, it could be very handy. But I have to point out that some of those images are already used in other subpages of the portal. If there is a strong consensus for this, I'll create a randomized Selected picture section for the portal, with captions and credits, but I don't want to create a section over objections from others. Maybe if we could pick out and select together a minimum of (10) good quality pictures, and list them here? Cirt (talk) 17:05, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

After taking some more time to look over User:Gran2/Free-use The Simpsons images, I think that page could be really helpful. We could certainly make a case for a selected picture section with all the guest stars and recurring guest stars - all we'd have to do to make it relevant would be to have a short sentence or two noting their significance to the show and/or what episode they guested in. Same goes for cast/production staff, a simple couple sentences or less would tie this in well to The Simpsons theme of the portal. Any objections? Thoughts? I could always create the section and subpages for "Selected picture" first, and we can remove it later if we don't like it. But it is another relatively easy thing to randomize and gives some more visual appearance to the portal, and it's one of the suggested points at Wikipedia:Portal guidelines. Cirt (talk) 21:51, 7 December 2007 (UTC).

  • I added a "Selected picture" section to show what it looks like, but feel free to revert it back to the previous edit if discussion on the talk page goes the other way. I'll be back later. Cirt (talk) 23:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC).

Main Topics

I added a Main Topics section, which is required as per Wikipedia:Portal guidelines. It is arranged in alphabetical order, with entries culled from the WP:FA article The Simpsons. Cirt (talk) 15:54, 6 December 2007 (UTC).

Character quote section

After multiple comments from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Simpsons, I added a randomized section with one quote from a character in an episode of The Simpsons. Some points on that section as it stands so far:

  1. There are 19 quotes so far, one from each season.
  2. No characters are repeated.
  3. Quotes are attributed to the character and the episode.

Cirt (talk) 02:43, 9 December 2007 (UTC).

It looks good, but I think we should have more than one quote per character. Where do the quotes come from, pulled from wikiquote or taken from a specific page? Also where can I nominate a quote? --Simpsons fan 66 06:20, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
can u give us more details Cirt? Like can i add it to my user page, which is what i first wanted, and how do we add/edit, etc these quotes? Ctjf83 talk 08:33, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, the quotes came from Wikiquote. See Portal:The Simpsons/Character quote, Nominations section. I'm not saying that quotes can't be more than one quote per character, but that is how I started off the first batch, for some variance in display (one quote per season, one per character.) Let me know which quotes you want to add from what episode, and I'll do my best to address it. Cirt (talk) 08:58, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
  • Oh, and to add it to your user page, just add {{Portal:The Simpsons/Character quote}} somewhere on your page, and a random quote will display there, just double check to make sure it randomizes when you refresh the page. Cirt (talk) 09:01, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
    • Hrm, that also transcludes the "Archive/Nominations" and "More at Wikiquote" bottom links, I'll have to look into this. Unless, of course, you don't mind those links showing up with the random quote on your userpage. Cirt (talk) 09:30, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
      • I'll let u look into it...I'd (along with most others here) would prefer to not get random noms from IPs and other random users viewing my page. Perhaps remove those things, and just give us a page to nom, or something! Ctjf83 talk 09:36, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
        • Fixed it. Add this code on your page where you want the random quote to appear: {{Random subpage|page=Portal:The Simpsons/Character quote|start=1|end=19|seed=31}} -- Cheers, Cirt (talk) 09:38, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
          • Actually, I've got a better idea, be with you in a sec. Cirt (talk) 09:39, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
  •  Done - Instructions at Portal:The Simpsons/Character quote displayonly. Cirt (talk) 09:47, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
I'm gonna be a pain...at the top, can you make it so it says "Random Simpsons Quote" so on my user page ppl know what it is...like it does on my random LGBT quote on my page Ctjf83 talk 09:54, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
I'd rather not. Some people might not want that, they may wish to have the option of having a plain quote with no other code transcluded with it, so they can format/modify headings around it how they wish. Just add the heading yourself directly above the code. Cirt (talk) 09:55, 9 December 2007 (UTC).
Good call, I love my new quote box and I can't wait for more quotes! Excellent job Cirt! --Simpsons fan 66 10:54, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! Cirt (talk) 11:06, 9 December 2007 (UTC).

Portal peer review

"Cultural references" sections

I have an issue with many articles about specific Simpsons episodes. Is this the right place to talk about it? My issue is that many articles contain unreferenced "Cultural references" sections. There are so many articles that it would take forever to tag them with {citation needed} or even delete the unreferenced information.
