Possible move to front page?[edit]

Would it be possible to move this to the front page as one of the featured portals at the top of the page? This portal hardly gets any attention (my update was the first in probably a few months, as it still had the World Cup on there as recent news) and it definitely deserves attention, since Sports & Game news hardly makes it to the front "ITN" part of the page, and is a major influence around the world. If this portal was featured as one of the 8 portals on the front page, I think it would get a lot more attention, and a lot more updating that it deserves. There's a nomination process for that. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:15, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Split[edit]

Why don't we split this into Sports portal and Games portal? I think there's a lot to talk about for both subjects. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.23.107.168 (talkcontribs) 03:18, 24 May 2005 (UTC).[reply]

I don't think it's really appropriate to have a baseball mitt as the image representing this portal, since baseball is largely confined to the Western Hemisphere. How about a soccer ball> RickK 66.60.159.190 17:18, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I agree, and if no one else has anything to say about it you should carry on with it right away. Red Star--00:02, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A split sounds good. I was actually looking for a track and field portal when I came in here, but there doesn't seem to be one. I was considering proposing one... but I am newbish <_< And the pic... I think that it should be something that doesn't specify a particular sport... perhaps something along the lines of a trophy? Komlon 05:26, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A split might be okay, but could also exacerbate problems with this portal. That is, portal maintenance has been lacking. On May 19th, the news was updated [1], for the first time since last August; the news hasn't been updated since then. There's a lot going on in the sports world - NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, World Cup, and surely much more. News should be updated several times a week, or daily. "Did you know", "Selected article", and "Selected picture" also need updating. I have been going around and checking all the portals - many which need attention. There's only so much I can do on each, so more help in maintaining this portal is very much needed and welcome. -Aude (talk | contribs) 17:25, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I might support a track and field (or "Athletics") portal, but it's essential that people keep up with it's maintenance and do updates. -Aude (talk | contribs) 17:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Boxing?[edit]

I was looking for a way into boxing from this sports portal. Luckily, I found chess instead. Are there any plans to include boxing as well?Creightn 14:38, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Top Picture[edit]

The picture of the baseball at the top should be deleted/replaced with a picture of a soccer ball, because soccer is apparently the most popular sport on this planet.--DIGIwarez 11:55, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, I soccer (football) already has its own portal. it should be something that doesn't match a sport. a medal, a ribbon, or a trophy was what I had in mind. Komlon 05:30, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have cleaned up the subportal links, and created a new picture for the intro which represents both sports and games. I welcome anyone to improve upon it. A trophy, medal, or ribbon might work also, as they are generic enough to cover both sports and games. -Aude (talk | contribs) 17:25, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Although soccer is the most popular game in the world, it is not appropriate to use an image of a soccer ball here as this portal covers both sports and games. A more broader image would fit into this portal; as long as it does not convey to the reader, which specific sport the image belongs to. --Siva1979Talk to me 02:08, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Player Article[edit]

I am just doing disambiguation link repair for Player, and unfortunately discovered that the article for Player (game) is very narrow, referring not to sports but mainly to card games and board games. If someone from this portal could please add a component to the artical regarding sports - I figure this portal would be the right placeto ask. Would be much appreciated! Thanks, --Gregorof 02:36, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Segnalation[edit]

Look here: Talk:Games of the Small States of Europe. What do you think about it?

What is your question? --B 21:39, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering if anyone here can point me to a convention for naming articles relative to sports/games that would cover the above-captioned article, Canadian Amateur Championship. My instinctive reaction was that this should be Canadian Amateur Championship (golf). I realize that this is the name of the event; I was just wondering if someone would be misled who was looking for a similar event with respect to, say, chess, figure skating, show jumping -- whatever. Accounting4Taste:talk 20:08, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copy/paste move[edit]

I have undone this copy/paste move. I don't care one way or the other what the portal is called or if there are two portals, but copy/paste moves are bad and incomplete moves (where all of the subpages are left here and there are references here) are a really bad idea. If it's going to be moved, it needs to be planned out and left open for discussion. --B (talk) 21:29, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There was a link to the movie Space balls under Aquatics. I left the item in, but removed the link. Could s.o. plse check what it was supposed to be? - or whether it was vandalism and should go out altogether. --76.97.245.5 (talk) 22:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. Found the troll in question: Moami22. Reverted the edit. --76.97.245.5 (talk) 07:50, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Games[edit]

A few features from Portal:Games/draft should be imported into here, and there are missing games from the subportals list. Also, the featured content should more often feature non-sport games (it has been heavily dominated by American football and association football). — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 10:52, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Years in Softball[edit]

Was surprised to find that there was a category for only one year ie Category:2007 in softball, and not even the current year. So have added years to current ie Category:2010 in softball with a decade navbox to quickly go to any year in a decade. So I hope that categories future years for 2011 etc are created, and also that all future articles on softball competitions have the year category eg “2011 in softball” as appropriate. Those in 2010 mostly did, but as a redlink. Hugo999 (talk) 05:40, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Horse racing[edit]

Table tennis: Automatic update of world ranking[edit]

Hello , in german WP world rankings of table tennis players are updated automatically using a special info box. See for example de:Zhang Jike or de:Timo Boll. I think this could be very interesting for you too. See also this edit. --Tsor (talk) 16:29, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic rotation of selected articles and pictures[edit]

I have set up the Portal to automatically rotate pictures and articles every month. The article and picture that has been up for the last several months (at least) will remain through the rest of January. There has not been a determination on what will replace them in February and I would like to open the floor to that discussion. When creating the page for the February selected picture/article, just copy the format from the January page. Let me know if there are any questions.--NMajdantalk 22:17, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As there have not been any further comments, I have selected the next Selected Picture and Article. The are both featured.↔NMajdantalk 18:14, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just in the off chance anyone is reading this, I have changed pictures to rotate weekly and scheduled them through the end of the year. I have no great heartburn about anything in there ... this portal had fallen into disrepair and I wanted to put something quality in there. I started out by going through all of the featured pictures on topic and scheduling them, then filling in other high quality images, trying to rotate between sports one week and games the next, with some artwork (as opposed to photos) mixed in and a diversity of sports. I have created nomination pages in case there is anyone reading this who would like to suggest some other monthly articles/weekly pictures.--B 06:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Peer Portal Review[edit]

Portal:Sports[edit]

What does this need to get to FPO status? Right now it has:

  • 20 Selected articles, all FAs or GAs
  • 22 Selected biographies, all FAs or GAs
  • 20 Selected teams (like biographies, but for teams), all FAs or GAs
  • 25 Selected pictures, all FPs
  • 20 sets of five DKYs
  • 12 sets of selected anniversaries (one per month)
  • The standard suite of portal items (related content, categories, associated Wikimedia)

Note that this used to be Portal:Sports and Games, however I broke the portal in two because the portal was just not working as it was, and none of the other projects combined the portals. I will begin creating Portal:Games soon.

Comments from Lionratz
  1. Add Wikiproject and Things you can do sections to encourage participation
  1. Summaries for all Selected sections are too long (according to the guidelines, " Article and biography summaries should not significantly exceed 200 words in length.")

Other than that, I have no other comments. This portal looks very appealing to me.--Lionratz (talk) 00:46, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add the "Things you can do" section soon. WikiProjects are already in there, in the "Related content" section. With that many items, images don't make sense to do them in two separate sections with icons, so I opted for one section with text. As for the size of the prompt, I think 200 is way too small. I opted for something of a more readable size, and believe me this is an improvement over what I did last time. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:01, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Comments from Adam Cuerden

Sport has its own pages at FP and own category at FA. Wikipedia:Featured_pictures/Culture,_entertainment,_and_lifestyle/Sport and Wikipedia:Featured_pictures/People/Sport lists 60 FPs between them, and Wikipedia:Featured_articles#Sport_and_recreation and the list of biographies just below it should get around that in FAs, although, admittedly, that would be divided up into two separate sections of the portal. Now, not every one of those is necessarily going to be completely suitable - some you might want to save for Portal Games, or might be too narrow in focus for a top-end portal - but it does seem that for such a high-level, linked-from-the-main-page portal, we should link to as much featured content as is reasonable to do. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:57, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like I've got some work ahead of me.
  • The major limiter for the images is that I want to have all the images be the same size, or as close to that as possible. I'd be happy to add more of the landscape and square images, but I worry that the portrait orientation images are going to look awfully small.
  • As to the articles (and the images) I worked very hard to try and prevent one sport or one country from dominating the portal. I'll add more, but one thing I do want to avoid is all of a sudden having 37 football players and 1 of everything else. The other thing I've been avoiding is athletes that are still in their prime, as I don't want to have to update someone's stats every few months. There's still a lot to work with. I guess I'm just saying all of this since you offered to help.
Thanks for the review. I'll be chipping away at this for a while. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:04, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Those are fair points. However, I do think a little psychology might do you well here. When people see 20 of each component, they think "He can't have reviewed everything." If they see a variety of numbers, say, 21, 23, 22, 24 - they'll think "Clearly, he selected the best from the selection available for each of them." I bet you'll never see another comment like my last one if you do that. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:54, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About the move[edit]

First great job with the portal. ..... I had to re-create Portal:Sports and games and make a redirect to here (it was just deleted) - Because its linked from thousands of pages that had a red link to nothing. We will have to change thousands of links (the code) from {{Portal:Sports and games}} to {{Portal:Sports}}. All the pages that have the portal template and Wikiproject banners will have to be fixed before Portal:Sports and games is deleted outright. We will also have to fix many sub-pages like Template:Portal/Images/Sports and games. I have also moved Portal:Sports/browsebar to Template:Sports browsebar as this is actually the banner used on all the sport portals as a header.Moxy (talk) 08:25, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The deletions were made at the request of User:Sven Manguard. That said, for some reason my script went a bit crazy and deleted a couple of additional pages. I thought I fixed all of my mistakes, but it appears I missed Portal:Sports and games. My apologies. Tiptoety talk 16:54, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about my part in this. Portal:Sports and games was a wreck when I first started digging around in it; it was built using the monthly system instead of random portal component, and hadn't been maintained actively since 2008 or maintained at all since 2010. I wanted Tiproety to delete some of the parts that weren't ever completed because all they were doing was adding extra clutter to the category page, and considering that the move from P:Sports and games to P:Sports wasn't clean, it's taken a while to sort out all the pieces. Long story short, I was planning on sorting out what to do with all the links to Portal:Sports and games after I finished rebuilding both Portal:Sports and Portal:Games. Sports is very much rebuilt. Games is still in the very early stages. Sven Manguard Wha? 07:05, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
