The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. The result of the move request was: not moved. As was pointed out in the discussion, these pages are essentially redirects, and we don't move redirects. The pages which would actually be "moved", if that were necessary, are Module:Location map/data/USA New York and Module:Location map/data/USA Washington, and then these pages would just be retargeted. – wbm1058 (talk) 00:30, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. Not sure how this eventually helps in terms of the lua modules. These two modules each consist of a single return require line that basically already act as redirects to Module:Location map/data/USA New York and Module:Location map/data/USA Washington, respectively. Perhaps it are those two that should be proposed to be moved instead of the ones proposed. And maybe the two images too that those two modules use, File:USA New York location map.svg and File:U.S. Washington location map.svg? Zzyzx11 (talk) 21:24, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: These moves could cause more collateral damage than necessary. I just recalled how confusing the "Module:" namespace can be sometimes: Both of these titles are redirects. Basically, I understand what Zzyzx11 is saying: The code on these modules act as redirects towards Module:Location map/data/USA New York and Module:Location map/data/USA Washington respectively. In addition, I looked around for a bit and am unable to ascertain where the current titles are being invoked. (I had originally closed this discussion and moved the page, but then reverted myself after I discovered the technical complications with this, especially considering that redirects cannot be set up in the "Module" namespace like they are in other namespaces.) An alternative path here would be to set up the new titles as redirects using the same code in the current titles, and then nominate the current titles for WP:TFD with rationale to replace them with the new titles prior to deletion. If there are technical limitations and collateral damage with such an actual page move in the module namespace, as you say, then this RM should be closed on grounds that the return require lines in the lua code are sufficient in place of an actual redirect. I do not think the titles are being invoked directly with hard coding. Looking at Template:Location map/doc#Parameters, the parameter {{{1}}} for the template is used for the name of the map, which will then invoke the specific lua module. So if someone specifies {{Location map|New York}}, only then will it then invoke Module:Location map/data/New York. And that does not include the various infoboxes that incorporate Location map, such as the pushpin_map parameters used on Template:Infobox airport, Template:Infobox settlement and the like. Or the way to specify a user selection of multiple maps, separated by #. Even if you go through TFD, a bot or someone manually will have to fish out all those different ways Location map is invoked. Oppose I see no problem this ambiguity is causing and adding complexity by moving this module redirect which might be invoked somewhere seems counterproductive. If this isn't used anywhere, there's no reason to move it, if it is used somewhere, then moving it would cause more problems than it solves. So essentially what the proponents are claiming is that the parameter |pushpin_map=USA#New York in e.g. Ithaca, New York's {{Infobox settlement}} needs to change to |pushpin_map=USA#New York (state) because the editors of articles such as Ithaca, New York might be confused that they are creating a map that locates Ithaca somewhere inside NYC. Lua error in Module:Location_map at line 522: Unable to find the specified location map definition: "Module:Location map/data/New York (state)" does not exist. And they expect Wikipedia's swamped and overworked gnomes to take time out from their work on the work queues flagging real, actual errors to work on fixing this imagined issue of the editors of articles about towns in Upstate being confused about whether these places might actually be City neighborhoods. Give me a break. Please get to work on fixing already documented errors rather than looking for imaginary problems. – wbm1058 (talk) 22:52, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
