Protected edit request on 21 August 2018[edit]

Please change the wording to: Changes to pages since you last visited them are shown with solid markers.

Please see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#Watchlist_notification for a discussion on the merits of this submission. Akld guy (talk) 15:03, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Akld guy: are they not also still in bold ? — xaosflux Talk 20:15, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Thank you for replying. The message was never in bold. But now I don't care about this matter. I received no response here for days, so I followed the hint given at the above discussion and checked "Don't show improved version". I'm now back to the original Watchlist display, which not only looks far better but loads much faster. Akld guy (talk) 20:30, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not done per withdrawal above, feel free to revisit at anytime. — xaosflux Talk 21:12, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: I have not withdrawn my request and it is disingenuous of you to say that I have. I feel the request has merit, and it met with approval of two other editors at the above ideas page. I simply found a workaround that suits me, but the wording is still pedantic and I would still like to see it changed. Akld guy (talk) 21:26, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Akld guy: OK no worries, turned it off due to your "I don't care about this" response above. We can certainly still look in to this! — xaosflux Talk 21:45, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just making sure we're all on the same page here:
    The current enwiki version is:
Changes to pages you haven't visited since the changes occurred are shown in bold, with solid markers.
    The system default message is:
Changes to pages you haven't visited since the changes occurred are shown with solid markers.
    The proposed new version is:
Changes to pages since you last visited them are shown with solid markers.
  • @Akld guy: I don't use this style WL normally, but reading above says that entire part about bolding is simply wrong, so it should be removed, correct? As far as the rest of the verbiage, would the system default suffice? — xaosflux Talk 21:52, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Akld guy: OK, so I tried reenabling the "improved version of the watchlist" - and my unseen watched items are indeed in bold, with solid markers. — xaosflux Talk 04:06, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Firstly, the current wording and my proposed change are exactly as you have laid out above. Secondly, I don't know where this notion of bolding is coming from. I never saw bolding in my watchlist notifications. I used bolding at the ideas page only to highlight the different versions and make the difference clear to readers there. Akld guy (talk) 04:19, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It seems you're talking about bolding of the watched article titles. Yes they are bolded and always have been. But the text of this Media-wiki message that I'm asking you to change has never been bolded. Forget the bolding...it's not even relevant. Akld guy (talk) 04:27, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Akld guy: The word "bold" in this message is currently in bold at MediaWiki:Rcfilters-watchlist-showupdated. Your proposed change specifically removing the clause about the bolding, which is relevant as it explains why some of the lines below would be in bold. Is it just the "haven't" part you don't like? How is this:
Changes to pages since you last visited them are shown in bold with solid markers.
xaosflux Talk 04:50, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Oh, I'm very sorry. I had forgotten that the word "bold" was itself bolded. It wasn't my intention to remove the bolding from it, and I'm sorry that we've gone around in circles over this. The version that you've shown in your 04:50 post directly above this is exactly what I intended to propose all along. Sorry that my forgetfulness lead to all this. Akld guy (talk) 06:22, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In my defence, I point out that the interface page (of which this is the Talk page) does not show any formatting but only the plain text version. It's necessary to examine the source of the interface page (as if one were going to edit it) to see that extra words about bolding are present, with HTML characters to make the word "bold" bolded. Akld guy (talk) 06:36, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done @Akld guy: I've updated the message, let me know if you need anything else here - "talking" about these things can be challenging on talk pages sometimes. — xaosflux Talk 11:33, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: I'm happy, TYVM, even though I went back to the original watchlist display and no longer see this introduction. Akld guy (talk) 19:53, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
