Leinster Chess Leagues

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leinster Leagues are amateur chess team competitions run by the Leinster Chess Union in the province of Leinster in Ireland.[1][2][3]

League structure[edit]

The leagues include a number of divisions which may be divided into sections e.g. North, South, Central in some years, depending on the number of teams participating.[citation needed] The number of divisions varies for the same reason.[citation needed] In the 2023/24 season there were three sections in the Bodley Cup but no O'Sullivan Cup divisions. At the end of each season, there is promotion and relegation of two or more teams between divisions, depending on the number of sections in the divisions concerned. As of the 2023/24 season, the Leinster Leagues consisted of the following divisions:

The Leinster Leagues are governed by the "LCU League Rules".[5] The LCU is affiliated to the Irish Chess Union,[6][not specific enough to verify] and players have to be registered with the ICU and all matches are rated by the ICU.[citation needed]

Knockout cups[edit]

The leagues normally start in late September and continue until early May. After this, clubs may put forward teams for three knockout competitions, from among players who played in the leagues. Recently,[when?] there have been group stages followed by a knockout phase with semi-finals and a final in each competition.[citation needed]

  • Branagan Cup[7] - for players from divisions 1 and 2
  • Killane Shield - for players who played in divisions 3 and below
  • William Brennan Trophy - for players rated below 1500
