In 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 7 December was to be the International Civil Aviation Day.[1]

The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) since 7 December 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing the Convention on International Civil Aviation.[1] The purpose of the day is to recognize the importance of aviation, especially international air travel, to the social and economic development of the world.[2]

ICAO selects themes for International Civil Aviation Day to focus on specific areas of importance within the aviation sector. For example, "75 Years of Connecting the World" was the theme for the 2019 celebration, marking ICAO's 75th anniversary. From 2019 through 2023, the theme is "Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development," highlighting the sector's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainable development.[2]
