Ambiguity of the First Paragraph

The first paragraph is quite confusing: The last sentence: "For uploading multimedia files that can be used in all Wikimedia Projects, you can use Wikimedia Commons." implies very strongly that the Wikimedia commons should only be used for multimedia files that are used in all wikimedia projects, and that there is another location for files which are intended only for use in wikipedia. However, there is no reference in the entire article to the location for wikipedia-only files! I'm still not convinced that one doesn't exist, because of the way that paragraph was constructed. So if there is, then please add a link to it in the first paragraph, and if there isn't, then please remove this ambiguity from the paragraph. Thank you. Uniqueuponhim

Special:Upload or "Upload a file" goes to whereever you are, on Wikipedia to Wikipedia, on Meta to Meta, etc. You can edit the master help file on Meta if you think that's unclear. -- Omniplex 15:35, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Caution: Galleries interfere with references

For some unknown reason placing an image gallery between a number of references causes the references above the gallery not to be included in the list of references displayed by <references/>. Image tables do not interfere with the references. --Jbergquist 07:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

How to get at an uploaded file's date

I'm working with a company designing its own wiki, and we're facing a sticky point ...

We have many internal company documents, and want to get at a doc's latest update, i.e., when was Image:User dino.jpg last updated? When was the annual report last changed? And that data on interest rates ...

Is there a way to "grab" these data & display them? Or just grab them — we'll figure out how to display them.

I realize, this may seem from left field, but thought I'd toss it out there. Thanks for any ideas. You may reply here or on my talk page

Uploading images and getting them to appear in the article.

Hello,

We have the test of our article entered and edited. The next step we have is to upload some of the figures, graphs and data tables that go with the article. Can someone give me guidance as to how you label the images so they will be included in the appropriate space of the article?

Thanks CindyOvertoncindy 17:45, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Image interfering with page format (the "Edit" link)

How does an editor get rid of the problem where putting a picture in disrupts the page's section "edit" links? I don't know if that makes sense, but take a look at The Forbidden Kingdom for example: you can see that there are no section edit buttons to click on because the image is in the way. But further down the page, all those section edits are there around the "References" section. How does one remedy this? I tried separating the image to its own paragraph but that did nothing. I also tried to not align the picture to the right. That also didn't work. Please help ~ GoldenGoose100 (talk) 20:57, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

ShouldBeJPG

I'd like to ask for users' opinions on the ShouldBeJPG tag. I didn't know it existed until today, when a user added it to a video game screenshot (Quake III Arena q3dm0.png) which I'd earlier uploaded as a PNG.

The purpose of the tag appears to be to encourage users to reupload or replace existing PNG and GIF images with JPEG equivalents in the interests of reducing file size. It asks: "If possible, please upload a JPEG version of this image." While JPEGs do indeed tend to be smaller than PNGs, I'm not sure how justified this tag is, particularly when it comes to screenshots (and also since it fails to mention any of JPEG's cons). A comparison I ran (here) between PNG and high-quality JPEG copies of the same image reveal noticeable noise and compression artifacts in the JPEG version.

Thanks for any comments! Huwmanbeing  22:17, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Unhelpful

In the sections "Image at the right", "Image at the left", etc., am I nuts or is the whole thing broken? The images show a weird "Demo" content and the lorem ipsum text is in the article rather than the image caption. Is that what it's supposed to look like? I'd try to fix it but hey, I came here for help! :) Franamax (talk) 04:52, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Image Addresses

How are these generated? For example, in the url "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ef/1AJD20Lindsay.jpg", where did the "e/ef" come from? This isn't usually an issue, but many browsers today filter advertisements by blocking the word "ad", so an image like "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ad/Lawndart.jpg" would not display. Is this something that is within our power to change? Ueli-PLS (talk) 23:35, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Coloured gallery?

Is it possible to change the colour of the gallery border so that it isn't grey? Please alert me via my talkpage if you answer. --Seans Potato Business 18:11, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

SVG

"SVG images uploaded earlier can be linked to, but not be directly embedded, e.g. Media:Wikipedia3fnlc1.svg (image description page) - see also m:SVG image support."

That no longer appears to be the case, yes? The see also page states that SVG upload is enabled and there is an inline image right there at the beginning of the page. SiegeLord (talk) 16:24, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

How to embedding image from commons in

Set this in my wiki site:

  • $wgAllowExternalImages = true;

And then I use

  • [[image:Wikipedesketch1.png|none|thumb|300px|Wikipede]]

to embed an image from commons. this line will show a picture here, however, only text link shown in my wiki site.

Can anyone help me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lihongzhai (talkcontribs) 10:13, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Halp!

I recently uploaded an image of my own creation (using Photoshop and a scanner). I was wondering if the image licensing is all in order for usage in Wikipedia. - Hexhand (talk) 23:22, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

How to upload an image

This first paragraph of the help page has a link, "How to upload an image". The target page has been deleted. This seems as though it could have been a very useful page.--Rpclod (talk) 14:40, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I endorse this - as a newbie to wikipedia I am looking for just this information. Natural fibre (talk) 13:38, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Claimed right-click bug

I moved the below from the main page (Help:Images and other uploaded files). If it's an actual bug (which I'm skeptical of) it should be filed at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/:

Since October 2007, in English Wikipedia, the right-click menu has periodically been blocked for many PNG images, so that Open in new Window or properties/size information was no longer available in Wikipedia for PNG or SVG images. The disabled right-click/size menu has only occurred in English Wikipedia, not Wikimedia Commons or other language Wikipedias, and right-click has not been disabled for the efficient GIF or JPEG image displays. It is a recurring problem: every few months, the right-click menu seems to work again for PNG/SVG images, but then the problem comes back: the right-click menu would then show the size of the whole article under a PNG Properties option (and not allow Open in new Window).
Whenever the right-click menu has been disabled, the images were still ok in the Commons or German Wikipedia, etc. To view PNG or SVG properties/sizes of thumbnailed images, edit a Wikimedia Commons page (or other-language wikipedia) to link the particular image, in edit-preview mode, then right-click the PNG/SVG thumbnail to view the properties or see other right-click menu options formerly available in Wikipedia for PNG/SVG images.

HELP!!

Sorry if this doesn't belong here but I am REALLY stuck on this one and don't know where else to go.

I recently moved my wiki from one host to another and everything went fine, except that all my images are now doing ... this. Clicking on the blank thumbnail takes you not to the image, but back to the "Image:whatever" page. Clicking on the link under the thumbnail, takes you to the image. No images are displaying in articles.

I have NO idea what went wrong here. All the images that got migrated over are doing the same thing. If I upload a new image (like this), or a newer version of the same image (like this), then it works and everything is fine. All the old ones, though, are pooched.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated, since I really, really don't want to have to re-upload all those images again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grugnir (talkcontribs) 16:53, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

UPDATE:
Here's what I managed to find in the code for the image pages. Not sure if this will help, but...

<div class="fullImageLink" id="file"><a href="/gorole/index.php?title=Image:AK-47_type_II_Part_DM-ST-89-01131.jpg" class="image" title="AK-47 type II Part DM-ST-89-01131.jpg"><img alt="" src="/gorole/skins/common/images/icons/fileicon.png" border="0" height="120" width="120"></a></div>

Why it's defaulting to fileicon.png, I have no idea...--Grugnir (talk) 18:36, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Drastically shorten

Draft for paragraph discussing more-advanced issues

There's some sentiment for introducing new readers to more-advanced issues such as galleries, so I propose appending the following paragraph to Help:Files#Using.

"Many options control how images are displayed. You can place an image on the left, on the right, centered, and without text flowing around it. You can adjust the image size, and let the reader move around in a panorama. You can avoid image stackups in several ways, for example, by alternating left and right images, by aligning two or more images, and if all else fails by forcing a break. You can create a gallery of images arranged into an array by using table syntax, by using a template such as {{Image gallery}}, and by using a gallery tag (unfortunately, gallery tags do not support alt text, so they generate galleries that are not accessible to readers who cannot see the images). Also, you can create plain pictures that do not have captions and can be mingled with text and other images; these can use more fine-grained techniques, including borders, vertical alignment with text, and control over links. You can also link to an image without displaying it. These options are described in more detail in the picture tutorial."

This would remove the need for the See also section since it incorporates discussion of galleries. Eubulides (talk) 18:16, 11 September 2009 (UTC) Draft updated as discussed below. Eubulides (talk) 17:36, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Very nice! But since the specific link that is now in the see also section isn't here, we should not remove it. What are you so burning to remove that that see also. Having see also's is the most ordinary thing in the world. Debresser (talk) 17:06, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. As WP:SEEALSO says, See also sections are intended for "less developed" articles. This page is intended to be a brief and self-contained help page; it is not intended to develop into a long, complicated page (the complications are supposed to be in the referenced pages, not here). As mentioned above, the reluctance to mention Wikipedia:Gallery tag is because gallery tags generates galleries with serious WP:ACCESSIBILITY problems. However, it's OK to mention gallery tags if we also mention the problem. I have adjusted the above draft to do that. Eubulides (talk) 17:36, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
You are very POV against galleries. That is your good right. But people use them a lot. And they don't care about the shortcomings you see in them. So you can't ignore them. And since you do not plan to mention anything about them, and they are related and relevant, you should have a see also there. Debresser (talk) 18:20, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
The previous comment seems to have ignored what's currently in the draft. The draft currently says that users can create galleries "by using a gallery tag". You are correct that users can ignore guidelines such as WP:ACCESSIBILITY and WP:ALT, but it is not good practice to ignore consensus guidelines, and the help pages should be written with the guidelines in mind. Eubulides (talk) 18:40, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I missed that. You did a good job here! Debresser (talk) 08:11, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Redirect to WP images page?

This page is in bad shape. Its lead does not summarize the body, and it contains lots of obsolete and detailed info that is not helpful to a new user. It'd be better for a new user to not read that page than to read it. Should we delete it, replacing it with a redirect to WP:IMAGES? Surely this page is not actually used much for help: WP:Images and WP:EIS seem to cover the territory. Eubulides (talk) 22:35, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Inaccessible file

I have a file called Golden Ears.jpg on Commons and I want to replace the existing file (Golden Ears Mountain.JPG) with on the Golden Ears (peaks). Unfortunately, there is an article on the English Wikipedia called Golden Ears.jpg, and so when I type in the filename, the image on EnWiki comes up. How do I get the one on Commons to the article? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (TalkContribs) 23:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:
  • I don't offhand see why readers need to be told about files: files are primarily a notion that editors need, not readers. What would be in the proposed new page? Perhaps that would help explain things. Eubulides (talk) 21:40, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
Readers will occasionally come across files such as videos, images and audio. I want to create a short article similar to Help:Images (a subset of Help:Files) that explains a little more about files. Some readers may want to know about the source, dates, copyright info about a file. I want a page that does not do into the complexities of page editing, uploading etc. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 21:49, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Might I make a suggestion, something bugged me about 'files', how about using 'help:multimedia' for your intended help page - this seems more apt and common usage - especially to readers? the more technical 'files' then sits comfortably as a hatnote? Lee∴V (talkcontribs) 00:38, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, that seems reasonable. I guess "multimedia" is commonly understood to be pictures, videos, sounds. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 08:25, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Why should "reader help" be in the Wikipedia and not the Help namespace? Ucucha 18:22, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Renaming files

I think the new section Help:Files#Renaming files (permanent link) is too detailed for this page. Most editors will never deal with file renaming. It appears most of the text was copied from Wikipedia:File mover. I suggest to replace the section text with the below main link and one line. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:16, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Only administrators and file movers can rename files. Others can suggest it with {{rename media}}.

{{Rename media}} then needs to be updated with the reasons for renaming, as a lot of requests are denied because they do not meet the criteria listed at Wikipedia:File mover, the bulk of which does not apply to standard users. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:31, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Good point, but there are many ways to get to {{Rename media}} so it should mention rename criteria in any case. I'm not a big fan of duplicating content which ought to be kept in sync (transcluding it would be an option). I have added "See rename criteria at Wikipedia:File mover#What files should be renamed?" right before the Usage line in the documentation for {{Rename media}}. I also added a See also link so more users will spot it.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 13:47, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Makeover

The copy edit included the following general ideas:

  • describe terminology in the intro such as description page being also file page, file being a synonym for image, and for the title
  • use "page name" instead of the many variant terms readers might otherwise see on other help pages
  • don't link just to create a font change indicating a page name
  • use italics where replacement text goes in links and templates, (and for page names having no grammatical articles introducing them)
  • remove repetitious links to the same (tutorial) page
  • make several references to other sections of the page
  • use bullet- instead of number-lists

Most of the material was already there, but I moved some of it around, while rewording, and I added a few links to other help pages. — CpiralCpiral 00:46, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
