Bogosian, an Armenian American, was born in Woburn, Massachusetts, the son of Edwina, a hairdresser and instructor, and Henry Bogosian, an accountant.[1] After graduating from Oberlin College, Bogosian moved to New York City to pursue a career in theatre. Bogosian has been married since 1980 to Jo Anne Bonney, with whom he has two children.

As a performer, Bogosian has a very distinctive style. His one-man shows are a minimalist blend of dark comedy, geopolitical commentary, and social realism. When performing on stage, Bogosian generally appears as a series of characters, using few props, if any (beer bottle, cane, cup) .
In 2005, he was critically acclaimed in his role as Satan in the play The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
In 2006, Bogosian joined the cast of Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Capt. Danny Ross, replacing Jamey Sheridan's character, Capt. James Deakins. He is one of numerous actors who first played a supporting role in the Law & Order franchise, only to return as a major recurring character; Bogosian played defense lawyer Gary Lowenthal in two episodes of the original Law & Order.
Some of his plays have recently been revived on and off-Broadway, with an updated version of his 1994 play SubUrbia at Second Stage Theatre and the Broadway premiere of his Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1987 drama Talk Radio, starring Liev Schreiber, in March 2007.
