The pre-professional phase of social work in India was characterized by religious and philanthropic activities aimed at providing relief to the needy and the oppressed. The professional phase began with the establishment of the first school of social work in 1936 and the recognition of social work as a discipline and a profession.[citation needed] The post-professional phase is marked by the emergence of new challenges and opportunities for social work in the context of globalization, social movements, and human rights.[2]
