Nigel is a supporting character from Pixar's 2003 animated film "Finding Nemo."[1] Voiced by Geoffrey Rush, Nigel is a brown pelican who befriends the Tank Gang in Philip Sherman's dentist office aquarium and plays a crucial role in aiding Marlin and Dory in their quest to find Nemo. Nigel's favorite thing is to sit perch on the windowsill and chat with the Tank Gang. However, the dentist believes Nigel wants to eat the fish. So Nigel is usually shooed away by the dentist.[2]
Role in Finding Nemo[edit]
In "Finding Nemo," Nigel assists Marlin and Dory by providing them with crucial information about Nemo's whereabouts and later helps in their rescue operation to save Nemo from the dentist's office. Nigel's knowledge of the human world and his ability to navigate the cityscape prove invaluable in the film's climax.[1]
Anecdote[edit]
In the recording sessions, Geoffrey Rush, the voice actor for Nigel, employed a unique technique to bring authenticity to the character's aquatic nature. To simulate the sound of a gullet filled with water (and fish), Rush spoke lines such as "I found his dad!" and "I can't go in there!" while holding his tongue. This method added a realistic texture to Nigel's dialogue, enhancing the portrayal of the pelican's close connection to the sea and its inhabitants.
