The National University of Pharmacy (NUPh) is a state institution of higher education subordinate to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, located in Kharkiv.

History[edit]

More than a hundred years of history and development of the modern NUPh are marked by the following stages:

  • 1812 — pharmaceutical laboratory of the pharmaceutical department of the medical faculty of Kharkiv Imperial University;
  • 1921 — Kharkiv Chemical and Pharmaceutical Institute — the first pharmaceutical higher educational institution in Ukraine;
  • 1930 — Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute;
  • 1992 — Ukrainian Pharmaceutical Academy;
  • 1999 — National Pharmaceutical Academy of Ukraine;
  • 2002 — National University of Pharmacy (NPU).

The training of pharmaceutical personnel in Ukraine began in 1805 at the Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Medical Knowledge of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Kharkiv Imperial University. After 5 years, the first graduates received diplomas of masters of pharmacy. In 1812, a pharmaceutical laboratory was opened and the training of personnel in the field of organic chemistry and pharmacognosy began. In 1921, the Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute was opened in Kharkiv based on the medical and pharmaceutical faculty of the Kharkiv Imperial University. The first rector in 1921-1922 was M. O. Valyashko. Among the teachers and founders were famous professors and scientists: M. P. Krasovskyi, A. D. Rosenfeld, M. S. Bokarius, M. A. Angarska. In different years, the university was headed by Yu. G. Borysiuk (1941—1942, 1944—1958), G. P. Pivnenko (1958—1971), D. P. Salo (1971—1980), V. P. Chernykh (1980 —2017). Holding management and teaching positions, they made a significant contribution to the development of pharmaceutical education and science.

On November 16, 2017, the NUPh staff elected Professor Alla A. Kotvitska as rector of the University. In 1937, the academic council of the institute received the authority to grant scientific degrees of candidate, and later, doctor of pharmaceutical sciences. Faculties were opened: for the training of military pharmacists (1952); for part-time education (1964-1971 and then - from 1999); for the training of foreign citizens (1974); the faculty of pharmacists' qualification improvement (1984, which in 1993 changed its status to the Institute of Advanced Training of Pharmacy Specialists); since 2001, the college has been operating within the structure of the National University of Pharmacy.

On March 1, 2021, NUPh received certificates from the International Certification Organization (ISO) for compliance with the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 50001:2018 standards, which confirm the implementation of environmental and energy management at the university.

Priorities[edit]

The priority directions of the University team's activities are the training of professional pharmacy specialists, the implementation of relevant scientific research, strengthening of the relationship with the practical health care system, active integration into the world educational, scientific, cultural and informational space.

The University successfully cooperates with higher education and scientific institutions from Europe, Asia, and Africa (education, practice, internships, joint scientific publications, lectures by leading scientists, conferences, exhibitions, export of scientific and technical products and educational services).

The National University of Pharmacy is a member or an official observer of a number of international university and professional associations, in particular, the International Association of Universities, the European Association of Pharmaceutical Faculties, the International Pharmaceutical Federation. In September 2013, NUPh signed the Great Charter of Universities — the most authoritative, powerful and influential association of higher education institutions in the world.

Personnel training[edit]

NUPh carries out the following educational programs:

The university has 4 faculties (pharmacy, pharmaceutical technologies and management, medical-pharmaceutical technologies, and the faculty for training foreign citizens), 21 departments, 7 research units, as well as the Institute for Advanced Training of Pharmacy Specialists and the College. Thus, the training of specialists for the industry is carried out according to a complete scheme: personnel training - advanced training - retraining - obtaining a second education - training of scientific and pedagogical personnel.

Educational and research work is carried out by 390 scientific and pedagogical workers. Including:

  • 1 academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • 9 academicians and corresponding members of branch academies of sciences;
  • 4 laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology;
  • 14 honored workers of science and technology of Ukraine;
  • 2 honored workers of health care of Ukraine;
  • 3 honored workers of education of Ukraine;
  • 2 honored workers of pharmacy of Ukraine;
  • 1 honored inventor of Ukraine;
  • 5 laureates of the State Prizes in the field of science and technology and numerous scientists awarded with state awards and awards of foreign universities and societies.

Educational and industrial practice of students is carried out based on more than 700 pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies and medical institutions and scientific organizations.

The training of scientific and pedagogical personnel takes place through postgraduate and doctoral studies in the specialty:

The university operates one-time specialized academic councils for PhD holders, as well as a specialized academic council D 64.605.01 for the defense of thesis for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (council profile: 15.00.01 – drug technology, organization of pharmaceutical affairs and forensic pharmacy, 15.00.02 – pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy). ebs

Research work[edit]

NUPh is a powerful research center with a developed infrastructure that covers not only the training of highly qualified personnel but also the full cycle of creation of medicinal products — from substance to medicine with the development of technical documentation and introduction into production. The scientists of NUPh have developed and put into practice original medicines: Altan (substance, ointment, tablets), Levosyn,Levomekol, Diacamph, Kratal, Inflorax, Flavanabol, Piflamin, Quinoxicain and various medicines from bee products.

Currently, there are 371 medicines and substances at various stages of study and introduction into production, 6 scientific schools are active. The following educational and scientific laboratories function:

  • State Research Laboratory for Quality Control of Medicinal Products,
  • Clinical diagnostic center,
  • Educational and scientific training laboratory of medical and biological research,
  • Educational and scientific training laboratory of chemical and technological research,
  • Scientific and methodical (research) laboratory for pharmaceutical education,
  • Center for Distance Learning Technologies of NUPh.

The exclusiveness and unique feature of the University is a clinical and diagnostic center of the European level, included in the list of health care institutions performing national functions.

Scientific schools of NUPh are known in the world - chemists, technologists, pharmacognostics, phytochemists, pharmacologists, organizational and economic and other fields. NUPh scientists receive grants within the framework of INTAS programs, branches of the National Science and Technology Center, Drug Information Association, European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Health Care, Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), SPRI International. The university organizes and conducts international scientific conferences, both offline and online, and also involves the community in scientific seminars and actively popularizes modern science, including within the framework of such projects as Scientific Picnics and Night of Science.

Scientific publications[edit]

For the first time, scientific journals were founded and published by NUPh: News of Pharmacy, Journal of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Social Pharmacy in Health Care. NUPh is also a co-founder of Pharmaceutical Newsletter, Pharmaceutical Journal, ScienceRise: pharmaceutical science, ScienceRise: biological science.

International activity[edit]

NUPh successfully cooperates with 53 educational and scientific institutions from 23 countries of the world based on inter-university agreements on educational and methodological cooperation, academic exchanges and joint scientific research. Students and employees of the University take an active part in academic mobility programs, including within the framework of the Erasmus+, NAWA, etc. programs, and also present scientific research and international conferences and published in top scientific publications of the world.

In addition, NUPh is a powerful center for training foreign students of higher education in English- and Ukrainian-language educational programs. Graduates and students of the university are citizens of more than 20 countries.

Public activity[edit]

NUPh is not only the leader of pharmaceutical education but also the flagship of the pharmaceutical community of Ukraine, which actively participates in the formation of the ideology and philosophy of the development of the industry: the organization and holding of numerous professional scientific and educational congresses, in particular with international participation, conferences, meetings. With the participation of the University staff, a unique Pharmaceutical Encyclopedia (2005), a number of national textbooks, dictionaries, reference books, etc., was created. The I (1963), III (1979), V (1999), VI (2005), VII (2010) and VIII (2016) National Congresses of Ukrainian Pharmacists were held on the basis of the University. At the suggestion of the NUPh team and the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the professional holiday Pharmaceutical Worker's Day (1999) and the title Honored Pharmacy Worker of Ukraine (2005) were established, and the Code of Ethics for Pharmaceutical Workers of Ukraine was developed and adopted (2010).

Also, NUPh actively cooperates with employers and representatives of practical pharmacy. One of the current joint projects is the Scholarship Project launched in 2021 for the 100 anniversary of the University. Employers choose the best students and assign them scholarships.

Material base and equipment[edit]

The educational and production areas of the National University of Pharmacy amount to 141,000 m². These are 10 educational buildings, 6 dormitories, a modern classroom and laboratory base, which includes 19 lecture halls, a scientific library, an experimental area, a food complex, a health, sports and recreation center, a of primary health care center for students, a publishing center, a computer center and a center for distance learning technologies. The scientific library of the University is equipped with unique domestic and foreign industry publications (since 1841). The library fund includes more than 1 million copies on paper and electronic media; readers have access to English-language full-text and abstract collections of periodicals and reference publications of the concern EBSCO Publishing. At the service of users are 6 subscriptions (scientific, educational, reference, foreign literature, electronic information resources, periodicals), 8 reading rooms and 2 electronic reading rooms, as well as library points at departments and in student dormitories. The University's dining complex is unique, providing healthy meals at discounted prices for students and employees. The total number of seats of 6 student restaurants is 700.

Since 2007, the implementation of distance learning technologies began at the NUPh. To date, distance courses in each discipline have been developed and are operating, which made it possible to ensure the continuity and quality of the educational process during the COVID-19 pandemic and with the introduction of martial law in Ukraine.

Student life[edit]

The Student Scientific Society of NUPh involves almost 960 students, the Council of Young Scientists has 130 young scientists. Students of education are involved in academic exchange programs with foreign partner educational institutions of NUPh (Republic of Poland, Republic of Lithuania, Republic of Estonia), receive personal scholarships, have the opportunity to study and undergo internships abroad.

The University has created the necessary conditions for the training of highly qualified specialists. Practically all disciplines are 100% equipped with an educational and methodical complex: textbook — study guide — methodical recommendations — test tasks (on paper or electronic media). The textbooks and educational aids created by the scientific and pedagogical staff of NUPh are used not only by students of the pharmaceutical faculties of higher education institutions of Ukraine and the CIS countries but also by students of many higher education institutions of a different profile. The educational literature of the NUPh has been awarded several times, including the State Prize of Ukraine.

Aesthetic and spiritual development of students is taken care of by the cultural center of the NUPh, which houses a vocal studio, a club of cheerful and quick-witted people, a theater studio, a pop dance studio, etc. University students are regular participants and prize-winners of city, regional and all-Ukrainian amateur artistic contests. There is student self-government at NUPh - the student parliament and the primary trade union organization of students. Thus, students have the opportunity not only to acquire knowledge but also to develop soft skills and realize all their talents.

University Ranking of Scopus Index According to the bibliometric database Scopus, in April 2023 NUPh takes the 44d place out of 204 out of Ukraine, with the number of publications – 1 690, the number of citations – 5 846 and the index Gorsha – 29 In 2021, according to QS World University Rankings, it is the best university in Ukraine and ranks 250-300th university in the world.
