The Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, a member of Australia's Group of Eight (Go8), is distinguished as the only dedicated information technology faculty within the Go8. It's located at Monash's Clayton campus in Melbourne, Australia, and has additional course offerings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Suzhou, China. The faculty was formed in 1990 through a merger between Monash University and the Chisholm Institute of Technology.
Overview
The faculty enrols over 7,500 students, making it one of the largest IT cohorts at a research-intensive university globally. It offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Areas of study include data science, artificial intelligence, digital health, and cybersecurity.
Commitment to Diversity
It is noted for educating the largest cohort of women in IT among the Go8 universities.
History
Originally named the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, it was established following the 1990 merger of departments from Monash University and Chisholm Institute. The foundation dean, Professor Cliff Bellamy, led the faculty until his retirement in 1996. Monash joined the Go8 in 1999, enhancing its reputation and research capabilities.
Research and Collaborations
The faculty is involved in interdisciplinary research with a focus on using technology for societal benefits, such as advancing agriculture, energy, and community safety through innovations in machine learning and computer modelling. It hosts several research centres and labs, such as the Monash Blockchain Technology Centre and the Centre for Learning Analytics.
Global Presence
In addition to its Australian operations, the faculty contributes to Monash's educational offerings in Malaysia and China and is part of the new Monash Indonesia campus initiative, which will focus on postgraduate and PhD programs.
