  • Comment: This is a bit of a mess, in more ways than one, but let's start with the references: most of the sources are cited incorrectly, and throw red error messages, with some (nos. 6, 11, 29, 31, as currently written) not working at all.
Also, please don't mix explanatory notes in with the references, it makes it even more difficult to figure out how much of this is actually referenced correctly. DoubleGrazing (talk) 13:05, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Since january 1, 2024, the Parc des Félins and Terre de Singes become Lumigny Safari Reserve.[1]. The new name results from the merging of the two components of the Parcs Zoologiques Lumigny, a zoological french park located in the commune of Lumigny-Nesles-Ormeaux in Seine-et-Marne, Ile-de-France.

The park, with a cumulated area of 92 hectares[2], is the territory of more than 600 animals belonging to almost 90 different species and subspecies[3]. Lumigny Safari Reserve hosts the most important diversity of felines on one geographical point in the world. The concept is the same since the founding of the park : present wild animals on large natural territories thought for their well-being. The establishment is also the living place of more than 150 primates and 200 birds.

The park opens to the public on the 14th october of 2006, most of the animals come from the Parc des Félins of Auneau, located in Auneau-Bleury-Saint-Symphorien.

In 2023, Hugo Jardin, Patrick Jardin's nephew (fonder of the company), takes over from his retired uncle parti after more than 37 years of investment in the service of biodiversity.

History[edit]

The Parc des Félins of Auneau[edit]

Parc des Félins of Auneau Map, 2004.

The Parc des Félins of Auneau is created on the 1st september of 1998[4] in Auneau, Eure-et-Loir, on the theme of the felines, with the same concept as the Parc zoologique de Lisieux (CERZA)[5] : create an area close to the nature life conditions in order to ensure the reproduction of some unknown to the great public and threatened felines[6], by focusing on their well-being[5]. The Parc des Félins is intimately linked to CERZA, because it was created by the same founders, Patrick and Thierry Jardin. The estate of the Auneau's Castle, with an area of 8 hectares (20 acres) is chosen to welcome the felines[4].

The desing of the park is, from its creation, to offer an area dedicated to the animals rather than the visitors. In large enclosures, felines aren't staged and can hide from the visitors. The park also reduce its impact on its forest estate by avoiding any weeding and excessive mowing[7].

In 2000, the parc was used as a shooting place for an episode of C'est pas sorcier dedicated to the felines.

Relocation to Nesles[edit]

Parc des Félins Map, 2010.

In 2004, the park director Patrick Jardin is looking for 40 additional ha to allow the evolution of the zoological space. New species must arrive while some, such as the cheetah are already under Birth Control, due to the lack of space to welcome the young[8]. However, despite the support of the city of Auneau and the Departmental Council of Eure-et-Loir[8], the park settles in two years in the Estate of La Fortelle in Lumigny-Nesles-Ormeaux, Seine-et-Marne[9] and opens its doors to the public on the 14 October 2006[10].

  • 2007 : The park welcomes an Arabian Wildcat , a pair of Leopard cat, two Sand cat, a Siberian Tiger, a new pair of Margay, two Oncillas and two Rusty-spotted cat.
  • 2008 : Facilities are created in several enclosures and new information signs are implemented[11].
  • 2009 : The park welcomes Malayan Tigers. A new group of animals arrives, it is the lemurs. Creation of the circuit on man's impact on nature[11].
  • 2010 : In january, the park is victim of a robbery, a female Ocelot of 2 months is robbed[12],[13]. As part of the improvement of the reception and information of the visitors, the information tent cover at the center of the park is replaced by a new room dedicated to the preservation and to the problems that felines, other animals and humans encounter on Earth. This place is located near the entrance. Creation of a conservation association SOS Félins & Co sponsored by the park. Implementation of the standardized system on the communication of threatened species inside European zoological parks as a part of an EAZA program [11].
  • 2011 : The park welcomes a subspecies of the Asian Golden Cat, the golden cat of the indo-malaysian peninsula and a new species of Canada Lynx. During the year, the Sand Cat installation is rebuilt[11].
  • 2012 : White Tigers are relocated in an enclosure of three hectares located near the African circuit. Their old enclosure hosts Asiatic Lions since the month of april. Moreover, a new attraction, opening expected in may, will be a dynamic 4D cinema with the theme of Bengal Tigers. Finally, a new pair of Sumatran Tigers arrives at the park in june as a part of the Breeding promgram[11].
  • 2013 : The Mission nature circuit is replaced by the Trans'félins. The visit is done by an on-track train[11].
  • 2015 : A new point of view on the white tigers' enclosure is done and an observation point is created on an enclosure which welcomes the tigers' preys : Gaurs and Blackbucks[11].
  • 2016 : On 15 September, opening of a new park : "Terre de Singes"[14]
  • 2018 : The mini-farmyard is relocated in front of the 4D cinema entrance. The tigers' preys enclosure is replaced by an enclosure for the East-African Lions and the park welcomes Barbary Lions in the previous East-African lions enclosure. A new gateway is created to better observe White Tigers but also the East-African Lions[11].
  • 2019 : The two parks are officielly renamed under the name "Parcs Zoologiques de Lumigny".
  • 2021 : The Terre de Singes opens a new theme circuit " l'Archipel des Singes" allowing the observation of ten new primates' species, of which an immersive route among the saimiris[15]

2024 : Parc des Félins becomes Lumigny Safari Reserve[edit]

After 37 years of work at the service of the protection and conservation of the biodiversity, Patrick Jardin, founders of the Parc des Félins takes a well-deserved retirement. The continuity of this family adventure started in 1986 with his brother Thierry with the creation of the park CERZA in Lisieux is guaranted as Hugo Jardin, Patrick's nephew takes over his uncle at the end of november 2023 after two years of preparation to this transfer.

Wishing to add a new look while modernizing the establishment, Hugo Jardin undertakes many changes by starting with the complete merging of Parc des Félins and Terre de Singes. The Lumigny Safari Reserve is therefore born with the ambition to continue its aventure at the service of biodiversity a its preservation.

Description[edit]

The principle of the park is the animals well-being and breeding ; the enclosures are studied to respect the environnemental conditions of each animal. Each enclosure has a sign with the species' description, the name of the animals, the description of the enclosure and the dangers of their natural environment. The park is organiszed in five circuits of which 4 are biogeographical zones  : Africa, America, Asia and Europe. The Terre de Singes park becomes an entire circuit dedicated to primates and birds from the parrots family. The Terre de Singes route therefore brings the visitors to the discovery of monkeys such as Barbary macaques, saimiris, capuchin monkeys, gibbons but also numerous little monkeys such as tamarinds, marmosets or even sakis. A large aviary allows visitors to wander in the middle of many species of parrots and parakeets.

Access[edit]

The entrance to Parc des Félins.

The park is close to the route nationale 4 near Rozay-en-Brie. Distant from Paris by 60 km to the East. At 20 km of the south of Disneyland Paris and 30 km at the north-west of Melun.

A bus stop is created in juin 2009. This one is on the bus lign Seine-et-Marne Express No. 01 which links cities from Melun to Coulommiers.

The management[edit]

The park is chaired by Hugo Jardin, and directed by Jonathan Patin, general manager of the company. The Park also has a veterinary surgeon Dr Catinaud.

Catering[edit]

At the park entrance, there is the Kilimandjaro restaurant which the interior walls were painted to Africa's colors with a decor inspired by the Massaï Mara.

Three takeaway outlets named the cas'kroute located in front of the restaurant, the cat's bar located in the reception building and the Oasis at the starting point of the three routes. The Oasis was developped and enlarged in 2022 allowing visitors to eat on a panoramic terrace in front of the white lions territory[3].

The visit[edit]

Europe and Overseas Circuit[edit]

The European circuit begins after the Cheetah's enclosure. It exists three enclosures in the underwood. They are occupied by par des Forest cats (Felis silvestris silvestris) and Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx lynx). The third recalls the presence of felines outside the Metropolitan France with the largest jaguar's territory of Europe, occupied by a pair of melanistic jaguars (Panthera onca).

The African Circuit[edit]

Sand Cat

The visit starts with Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) which are in a huge enclosure of 3 hectares allowing them to express their running speed, a very large observatory was created in 2011 and allows to see the plain at 360°[16]. The visit goes along the enclosure of the West-African Lions (Panthera leo bleyenberghi). Where you can find different information points on the felines' life.

The next enclosure us occupied by Servals (Leptailurus serval). Since the opening of the park in 2006, an other enclosure est occupied alternately by jaguarundis and margays depending of births. In both parts of the path to the lions are located Arabian Wildcats (Felis silvestris gordoni), then Sand Cats(Felis margarita) and Persian Leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) and finally Caracals (Caracal caracal).

The visit ends with the Cheetahs' breeding enclosures (Acinonyx jubatus) and the access to the elevated observatory to see the beasts. At the end of march 2010, the park welcomes a new female cheetah in hope of a breeding with one of the males.Indeed, of the two females already owned by the park, one is too young and the other is too agressive and impregnated too many times by the man. The cheetah was the only species that the Parc des Félins hadn't succeeded to breed[17]. Since 2012, a female cheetah is born[18]. An extension of the parc in 2012 allowed an access to the second part of the asian circuit.

The cheetah's enclosure also allows to see the White Lions (Panthera leo krugeri) then taking the path in the opposite direction, we see on the left of the Black Panthers (Panthera pardus) and on the right of the East Africans Lions (Panthera leo) with the Barbary Lions (Panthera leo leo) before going on an other point of view to see the West African Lions (Panthera leo bleyenberghi).

In 2018, the old enclosure of the tigers' preys welcomes a group of East African Lions (Panthera leo). From the observation platform of the white tigers, a gateway was implemented in order to get a new viewpoint for the white tigers but also the lions.

The American Circuit[edit]

Jaguarundi.

The American Circuit begins at the end of the West African Lions' enclosures. The first enclosures are theMargays (Leopardus wiedi) then Ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) on the side, the en closure of the new residents of 2011, the Canada Lynx (Lynx canadensis) instead of the Jaguar (Panthera onca).

The visit continues with the Margays' enclosure (Leopardus wiedi), Geoffroy's Cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi) and the Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus). The circuit continue with the Pumas' enclosure (Puma concolor), and we arrive in a dead end to admire the jaguarundis (Herpailurus yaguarondi) which are very scarce in European Zoos.

The visit ends by the Bobcats' enclosure (Lynx rufus) and the jaguars.

The Asian Circuit[edit]

First part[edit]
Siberian Leopard Cat

The first felines are the Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and the Rusty-spotted Cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus).

The park allows to welcome rare felines such as the Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), theAsian Golden Cat (Pardofelis Catopuma temmincki), the Indo-Malaysian Golden Cats, (Pardofelis temminckii temminckii) the Bengal Leopard Cats (Prionailurus bengalensis bengalensis), the Jungle Cats (Felis chaus), the Fishing Cats (Prionailurus viverrinus).

The visit continues with the enclosures of the Asiatic Lions (Panthera leo persica), the Siberian Tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), the Malayan Tigers (Panthera tigris jacksoni), the Amur Leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) and the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx wrangeli). An observatory at the Malayan Tigers allows to see the species of tigers. The visit ends with the Pallas' cat (Otocolobus manul), the Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), the Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia) et les Siberian Leopard Cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura).

Second part[edit]

This second part, created in 2012, is located after the cheetah's breeding enclosure, it allows to welcome on the right a second enclosure for the Sumatran Tigers(Panthera tigris sumatrae) then we arrive at the second train station of the trans'félins. Finally, a platform allows to see on three hectares on agricultural lands White Tigers (Panthera tigris). An enclosure named the tigers' preys and hosting Gaurs (Bos frontalis ), Blackbucks (Antilope cervicapra) and Chitals (Axis axis) was present between 2015 and 2017. Its access is located at the left of the platform.

The Madagascar Circuit[edit]

Lemurs at the Parc des Félins

This area was created in 2009. On two islands, lemurs move freely in the natural environment of the islands and the representatives of this species are the Black Lemurs (Eulemur macaco), the Crowned Lemurs (Eulemur coronatus), the Red-ruffed Lemurs (Varecia rubra) the Red-bellied lemurs (Eulemur rubriventer), the Mongoose Lemurs (Eulemur mongoz) and finally the mpost numerous on the islands, the Ring-tailed Lemurs (Lemur catta).

The Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia variegata) are no longer present in the park.

Babette's Farmyard[edit]

From the opening of the park to 2017, the mini-farm was located in front of the European Circuit's enclosures. In 2018, it was replaced in front on the 4D Cinema entrance.

Trans'félins[edit]

The Trans'félins allows visitors to discover the largest enclosures of the park from a different angle than the standard visit. Visitors can therefore come aboard a real little touristic train to observe the territories of the lions or the cheetahs and increase the probability to see certain park's resident. With two train stations, the attraction also allows to link the two most distant points of the park without walking.

During the second part of the route, mini-scenographies talks to the passengers about the big problematics encountered by the biodiversity.

4D Cinema Attraction[edit]

Since 2012, a new attraction opened behind the restaurant. It's the projection of the 4D film « TIGRRR » in it, you follow the life of a young Bengal tiger. This attraction is composed of a shop, a waiting room and finally a movie theater. The movie is 8 minutes long.

Species Conservation[edit]

The Parc des Félins is part of Felines' rescue programs in the world because before anything, this park is made for European and International Breeding programs (EAZA Ex-Situ Programme, ESB).

Breeding[edit]

Despite the optimal conditions, infant mortality remains significant for certain species raised in the park.

The park opens on the 14 October 2006 after the adaptation of the animals in their new environment. Park directors had estimated 200,000 annual visitors for five years before increasing the number to 250,000. The park's popularity shows that there are more annual visitors than expected, making it one of France's 20 most visited zoos.

Our main clientele is French, mostly from the Paris region, but our international clientele has been growing in recent years.

Impacts on local tourism[edit]

Although it attracts many visitors, the Parc des Félins does not represent a strong point for Hotels and the local restaurant, the profits of establishments located in the region not increasing after its opening[25].
