Kathniel refers to the love team or a power couple[1] which consisted Filipino actors Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. As part of a love team they often appeared in several film and television series together as fictional couples. Their romantic relationship in real life was also subject of public interest.

History[edit]

2011–2017: Early years[edit]

Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla first appeared together in the 2011 television series Growing Up. Bernardo playe dthe role of Elle, a volleyball player. Padilla on his part played the afternoon series character's teammate. [2][3][4]

It was believed among fans that Bernardo and Padilla's romantic relationship began on May 25, 2012.[2] However the two would not explicitly say they are a couple until a few years later. They would appear in their first prime time series Princess and I, where the played the main leads.[5]

Their first feature film together is 24/7 in Love which was released in November 2012. This would be followed by their first top-billed film Must Be... Love in March 2013, and their first Metro Manila Film Festival and horror film Pagpag.[2]

Kathniel were featured in the 2015 film Crazy Beautiful You. In the same year, they began starring in the Pangako Sa ‘Yo adaptation of 2000s series of the same name.[2]

In mid-2016, Bernardo and Padilla would say that they are "exclusively dating" each other but refused to publicly give any other label to their relationship.[6]

In Barcelona: A Love Untold which premiered in September, the couple did a more mature portrayal[2] and made their first on-screen kiss.[7]

2018: Confirmation[edit]

In August 2018, at the media launch of their film The Hows of Us, the couple officially confirmed it hey have been in a romantic relationship.[8]

2019: Hiatus[edit]

Though in the same year, Bernardo said they wanted to do separate projects to advance their own careers independently but not where they would have a different on-screen partner than each other taking into consideration the sentiment of Kathniel fans.[9] They would mutually decide not take the same projects in both film and television for the following year.[10]

Bernardo would play as the leading lady to another actor; Alden Richards in the 2019 film Hello, Love, Goodbye.[11] Richards part of AlDub, a love team with Maine Mendoza.[12]

2020–23: Return[edit]

Kathniel's return was planned to happen in 2020, with both people signing a new three-year contract with ABS-CBN.[13] This plan was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the revocation of ABS-CBN's franchise.[2]

They would reunite in the streaming series The House Arrest of Us which was first released in October 2020.[14]

Kathniel would have their first joint vlog in Bernardo's YouTube channel in a Valentine's day video in 2021.[2]

Their last television project together would be the 2022 series 2 Good 2 Be True.[15]

Dissolution[edit]

Around early November 2023, Ogie Diaz reportedly said that he received unconfirmed information that Bernardo and Padilla already broke up. The rumors was received badly by Kathniel fans calling Diaz a fake news peddler.[16]

Apparently dispelling the rumors, the two appeared together at an Omega event on November 14. They danced together.[17]

On November 30, Bernardo confirmed the end of her relationship with Padilla through her social media account. She said that they parted ways amicably.[18]

Terms associated with the love team were searched heavily according to Google Trends in the Philippines following the confirmation. Kathniel in general has been the most searched love team domestically and globally since 2011.[19]
