The International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) is an independent, not-for-profit, Non-governmental_organization international association established in Paris, France on 1974. IFAN's Members are national organizations dedicated to the application of international standards,  as well as various organizations such as companies, professional and trade associations, academia, conformity assessment bodies, consultancies, and governmental agencies.

IFAN has several Memorandum of Understanding with international and regional standards developing organizations, including ISO, IEC, CEN and CENELEC.

Overview[edit]

IFAN was founded in 1974, when eleven national standards users' organizations convened in Paris for an International Conference.

The Conference agreed to create IFAN as an international body dedicated to addressing the challenges and interests of standards users globally.

History[edit]

1974, Paris (France), on occasion of 1st International Conference, as International Federation for the Application of Standards -- Fédération internationale des associations pour la pratique des normes -- Internationale Föderation der Ausschüsse Normenpraxis (IFAN).

Present name adopted, 1999.

Objectives[edit]

IFAN has developed a set of objectives:

  1. Uniform Implementation: The uniform implementation of international standards without deviation and the development of solutions to standards users' problems, without engaging in the actual drafting of standards.
  2. Consolidation of Interests: The consolidation of standards users' interests and views on all aspects of standardization and conformity assessment. IFAN actively cooperates with international and regional standardizing bodies, such as ISO.[1], IEC, ITU, CEN, CENELEC, COPANT, etc., to communicate user views effectively.
  3. Networking: The promotion of networking in the field of international standardization and conformity assessment, fostering collaboration and information exchange among members.

Membership Categories[edit]

IFAN has five categories of membership:

  1. National Members
  2. Developing National Members
  3. Corporate Members
  4. Individual Members
  5. Associate Members

IFAN has a diverse membership which reflects its commitment to inclusivity and collaboration across the various sectors involved in the application of standards and standards development.

IFAN is a voluntary organization whose members are recognized standards users' organizations, companies or individual members who are the users of standards either in their day-to day work or are experts in standards.   Members meet annually at a Members’ Assembly to discuss with the members the strategic objectives of IFAN.
