Indian Mutiny 1857[edit]

Captained by Captain William Heath.

20th May 1857 - Sailed from Portsmouth, England to Singapore, transporting troops from the 82nd Regiment of Foot to China.

25th July 1857 - Arrives at Cape of Good Hope.

2nd August 1857 - Departs the Cape to continue journey to Singapore.

9th Sept 1857 - Assistance is 1600 miles of the Java Head, where it helps the gunboat 'Firm' with supplies.

The Assistance continued onto Singapore. Meanwhile, news came overland of the Indian Mutiny, the siege of Delhi, the massacre of Cawnpore and the situation at Lucknow garrison. Orders had been sent to the Cape by Lord Canning the Governer General of India to alter the ship's destination to Calcutta but they had already left. Steamers were sent in pursuit but failed to overtake them (HMS Assistance and HMS Adventure).

28th Sept 1857 - Arrives in Singapore, journey had been delayed due to getting stuck on a mud bank for 24hrs.

30th Sept 1857 - Assistance leaves Singapore destined for Calcutta with the 82nd Regiment of Foot.

12th Oct 1857 - Arrives in Calcutta
