Finnish brass septet is a wind ensemble which consists of conical bore brass instruments. It was developed in 1870s by Adolf Leander (conductor of the Guards Band of the Finnish Defence Forces in 1874-1899) together with bands quartermaster Antti Ahonen. In the beginning these septets were only found in military bands but after a while also youth associations, voluntary fire brigades and workers associations established their own septets. The golden era of the septets was in the beginning of 20th century and the repertoire was mostly arranged popular music although Finnish composers like Jean Sibelius, Leevi Madetoja and Toivo Kuula have also composed for the brass septet.[1][2][3]
Instrumentation[edit]
So called "pure" Finnish brass septet consists of conical bore brass instruments in e-flat and b-flat. In some compositions also percussion is included.

- 1 tenor horn (E♭) (called also alto horn)
- 1 baritone horn (B♭)
- 1 euphonium (B♭)
- 1 tuba (EE♭)
