It wants to foster cooperation and networking, publish policy statements, as well as supporting ecological education at universities.[1]

The Society publishes the international journal of Basic and Applied Ecology and 'News of the GfÖ' as well as the 'Proceedings of the GfÖ'. The last one published presentations from the annual meetings first as articles and later as abstracts.
