Dokyeom (Korean: 도겸), also known as DK, born as Lee Seokmin (Korean: 이석민; born February 18, 1997), is a South Korean singer managed by Pledis Entertainment.[1] He is a member of the boy group SEVENTEEN takes position as a main vocal, and is part of the group's Vocal Team.[1] Additionally, Dokyeom holds the leadership position within the special unit BSS, also known affectionately as Booseoksoon, alongside fellow members Hoshi and Seungkwan.[2]

Dokyeom made his debut in 2019 as the lead role, Arthur in the Korean musical XCalibur.[3][4] In 2021, he returned to play the role of Arthur once again in XCalibur's 2021 production.[5][6][7] Then, on September 19, 2023, Dokyeom was appointed as Bally's Global Brand Ambassador.[8][9][10]

Early Life[edit]

Dokyeom was born in Mapo District but raised in Yongin City, South Korea.[11] He graduated from the renowned School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA) in 2016, where he majored in Practical Dance.[12][13][14]

Career[edit]

Pre-debut (2012 - 2014)[edit]

Dokyeom participated in Pledis open audition through a mutual recommendation, and passed the audition in 2012. Successfully passing the Pledis Open Audition in 2012, Dokyeom began his journey as a trainee for 2 years and 7 months before making his debut with SEVENTEEN.[15]

In 2013, he made appearances on Seventeen TV, an online reality program aimed at introducing Pledis' trainees and showcasing potential members of the boy group Seventeen prior to their official debut. This show was periodically broadcast on Ustream, offering glimpses into the trainees' training routines, singing sessions, choreography creation, and recreational activities. Additionally, the online program featured their participation in concerts titled Like Seventeen.[16]

Dokyeom made his debut as a member of the South Korean boy group Seventeen in 2015 with the release of their extended play "17 Carat" on May 29, 2015.[17] Renowned for his exceptional vocal abilities, Dokyeom serves as the main vocalist for the group, and a pivotal member of the "Vocal Team" within Seventeen.[1]

On July 19, 2021, all members of Seventeen renewed their contract with Pledis Entertainment.[18] To this day, Seventeen continues to stand out as one of the top Kpop groups. Recently, Seventeen also claimed the top first on the IFPI Global Album Sales Chart, which tracks unit sales across all physical formats and full album downloads.[19]

BSS (2018 - Presents)[edit]

In 2018, together with Hoshi and Seungkwan, Dokyeom form a subunit of Seventeen, BSS, where he took on the role of leader,[2] the group debutted with "Just Do It" single on March 21, 2018.[20][21] On February 6, 2023, the subunit made their comeback with a release of their first single album, Second Wind.[22] The group quickly ascended the global charts, as they achieved remarkable sales of 478,679 copies on the album's debut day, according to Hanteo Chart.[23] Additionally, their title track, "Fighting!" claimed the number one position on Japan's Oricon Daily Single chart.[24] At the Asia Artist Awards 2023, BSS secured their first-ever Daesang, winning the prestigious title of "Best Performance Of The Year".[25][26][27]

Musical[edit]

2019 Xcalibur[edit]

On February 28, 2019, Dokyeom was cast as Arthur, a leading role in the Korean musical Xcalibur, marking his debut as a musical actor.[3][4] Dokyeom's flawless singing skills provided a consistent performance, and his portrayal of Arthur, navigating through a range of emotions demonstrated his depth as a musical actor, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.[28] Later that year, EMK Musical Company released an album of Xcalibur live stages performances, in which Dokyeom was featured in.[29][30][31][32][33] Dokyeom was nominated for the Musical Male Rookie of the 2019 Stagetalk Audience Choice Awards[34] and he was too nominated for the Male Rookie Award of the 4th Korea Musical Awards.[35]

2021 Xcalibur[edit]

On June 21, Pledis Entertainment has officially announced Dokyeom's return to the musical stage in Xcalibur, marking his second appearance in the production since his debut performance in 2019.[5][36] This confirmation underscores his continued dedication to the musical theater scene, showcasing his passion for the craft and his desire to further explore and expand his talents on stage.

Xcalibur the Musical Documentary: Dokyeom's Brilliant Journey[edit]

On September 2022, the EMK Musical Company released a documentary titled "Xcalibur the Musical Documentary: Dokyeom's Brilliant Journey" (Korean: 엑스칼리버 더 뮤지컬 다큐멘터리: 도겸의 찬란한 여정), highlighting Dokyeom's remarkable growth as a musical actor.[37]

Personal Life[edit]

Dokyeom is recognized by his fans for his compassionate and empathetic nature, showcased notably in a Dingo Story YouTube series titled "수고했어 오늘도" (pronounced: sugohaess-eo oneuldo; translated: Good Job Today Too), released on February 13, 2023. In this episode, he addressed his fans' concerns about feeling unfulfilled despite their hard work by sharing his own struggles and offering understanding.[38] Additionally, Dokyeom personally prepared a heartfelt lunch box filled with sincerity, dishes like bulgogi, egg rolls, stir-fried sausage and vegetables, hot beef soup, tuna lettuce wraps, and various side dishes.[39]

Moreover, Dokyeom occasionally treats his fans to cover songs released on Seventeen's YouTube Channel, including covers of "The Road"[40], "Amusement Park",[41] "Betelgeuse",[42] "Sequel",[43] and many more (please refer to External Links section for his covers).

Outside of his music career, Dokyeom is an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying activities like football, volleyball, baseball, and basketball in his leisure time. He has had a lifelong passion for baseball, often expressing his support for the Doosan Bears.[44][45] On April 2, 2023, Dokyeom had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Doosan Bears game.[46][47][48]

In 2020, Dokyeom and Seungkwan were seen passionately supporting their favorite team, the Korean Ginseng Corporation (KGC),[49][50] now known as the JungKwanJang Red Sparks (Korean: 대전 정관장 레드스파크스),[51] at the Dodram 2019-2020 V League. Recently, on March 24, 2024, the duo was once again spotted cheering for the Red Sparks at the Dodram V-League 2023/2024.[52][53]

2022 Bring Green[edit]

In 2022, Bring Green's collaboration with BSS's Dokyeom, Seungkwan, and Hoshi came to the forefront with the introduction of the Artemisia Artemisia line.[54][55] This collaboration was officially announced via social media posts on Twitter and Instagram.

2023 S2ND[edit]

On the June 26, 2023, the cosmetics brand S2ND revealed its latest collaboration, revealing Dokyeom and Seungkwan as their exclusive models[56].

2023 Bally Global Brand Ambassador[edit]

On September 19, 2023, Swiss luxury fashion house Bally announced Dokyeom as its newest global brand ambassador.[8][9][10] Prior to the announcement, he had made an exclusive appearance at the house’s Fall/Winter 2023 Milan Fashion Week on February 25, 2023.[57][58] Since then, he has maintained a close relationship with Bally, further affirming his alignment with the brand's values. Bally CEO Nicolas Girotto cited his versatility, fashionable demeanor, and amiable disposition as decisive elements in his appointment as the brand's latest global ambassador.[9]

Dokyeom commenced his global activities with Bally by participating in events such as the Bally Spring/Summer 2024 Collection at Milan Fashion Week on September 23, 2023,[59] and the Bally Fall/Winter 2024 at Milan Fashion Week on February 26, 2024.[60][61][62][63] Additionally, he recently appeared in Bally's 2024 Spring/Summer campaign..[64][65]

2024 BSS Oppo Reno11[edit]

March 20, 2024 marked the official announcement by the global smartphone leader, OPPO, regarding the selection of Dokyeom, Seungkwan, and Hoshi (BSS) as the newest OPPO Reno Experts for OPPO’s APAC markets[66].
