California Poets in the Schools is one of the nation’s largest writers-in-residence programs. We reach more than 22,000 K-12 students each year in public, private and alternative schools, after-school programs, juvenile detention, hospitals, and other community settings.

CalPoets was established in 1964 as part of San Francisco State University’s Pegasus Program and is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with support from the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, foundations, corporations, and generous individuals.

CalPoets reaches students statewide, holds an annual conference publishes an anthology of the year’s best student poetry, and sponsors local readings and performances. California Poets in the Schools has been an active supporter of the national recitation competition, Poetry Out Loud, since it inception.

California Poets in the School has supported the development of several Youth Poet Laureate Programs in conjunction with Urban Word throughout California, including Marin County, Mendocino County, Sonoma County, Santa Barbara County, and Ventura County.

Purpose of the Literary Arts Organization[edit]

California Poets in the Schools Poet-Teachers help students become adults who will bring compassion, understanding and appreciation for diverse perspectives to dialogue about issues which their communities face.

As a membership network the organization offers opportunities for professional development, peer learning and fundraising assistance for Poet-Teachers in California. It also cultivate relationships with school districts, foundations and arts organizations which can fund and support their members’ professional practices.
