Are the templates supposed to be filled out in a manner to get the articles to sort by essay title, by username, or something else? I ask because the existing entries seem to be all over the place on this. Some are even under "U" for "User". *Dan T.* (talk) 04:51, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Right, the template needs to be fixed to sort it properly under the name of the essay not the username.. and any essays with the [[Category:User essays]] tag placed manually are automatically sorted under U for "Username" unless you specify what letter to sort it under, as in: [[Category:User essays|T]] to sort it under the T's. All those essays under "U" should be re-sorted and I'd like to know if there's an easy and quick way to do this without having to edit each essays category tag. -- OlEnglish (Talk) 19:04, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they should be sorted by the first letter after "User:" or "Wikipedia:". Same goes for the rest of our non-articles.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:51, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proposals for subcategories[edit]

This category is getting pretty large and I thought some more subcategories would be beneficial, so I added two new ones; Category:User essays on notability, and Category:User essays on deletion. Please let's try to fill these by sorting existing essays and adding new ones directly under these subcats. In the future we can expand even more:

And so on. Though the question is, whether it's more useful to sort these by topic or username? Are readers searching for user essays more likely to be interested in who wrote the essay or what they're writing about? -- œ 20:45, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
