Sort order

I'm fixing the sort order for some that didn't have it specified and thus were listen under "."

I have just spent an evening cleaning up the sort order. For cartridges which start with "." I have added a DEFAULTSORT tag containing the cartridge name without the ".". For most metric cartridges I have deleted the DEFAULTSORT tag, although I left some in to make x=×. For most cartridges I have deleted any category-specific sort keys. Cartridges now sort the same way on the Category list and also the ammo-stub list. I have made a few errors, and have only modified entries which were in the wrong order, so there is still plenty of work to do on this! StraightAsADie (talk) 14:15, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Split?

I was thinking that this category should be split into Category:Pistol cartridges and Category:Rifle cartridges? Pistol cartridges are used in pistols, revolvers, submachine guns and some carbines while rifle cartridges are used in rifles, assault rifles and machine guns. .17-357 RG is a pistol and rifle cartridge. It is currently chambered in semi-auto and single shot pistols as well as coventional bolt action rifles. It was designed to be effective in relatively short barrel applications. As an example an 18" rifle barrel. As a general issue, there are so many cartridges that are common to both applications it is difficult to split them into a specific applications.--Joe4570 —Preceding comment was added at 16:18, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

I feel it would be unwise to attempt that distinction. There have been a number of United States cartridges intentionally designed for both revolvers and level action rifles to simplify ammunition requirements. The early family included the .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40, and this has subsequently been expanded to include .357 Magnum and the .45 Long Colt. The .44 Magnum has been adapted to both revolvers and self-loading rifles, and virtually every type of rifle and handgun action has been adapted to fire the .22 Long Rifle.Thewellman (talk) 02:23, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Sub-category display

I don't know if the sub-category display is broken, or if we're doing something wrong. This category seems to show only 1 sub-category in it's list, but it seems to display the number 8 saying that there are others? (Or did that mean there are 8 in the 1 showing sub-category?)

Also it doesn't seem to be showing sub-categories like Category:Magnum pistol cartridges which I would have thought it should. Category experts? AliveFreeHappy (talk) 20:40, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Non-diffusing subcategories

If all the cartridges which are in a subcategory were removed from Pistol and rifle cartridges category, as Wikipedia:Categorization#Subcategorization recommends... then this page is going to show no Remington cartridges, no Winchester, no Weatherby, no Magnums, no military cartridges. It is going to be a list of oddball and wildcat cartridges only.

I know that as a person interested in cartridges myself, I would find a complete list with optional special-interest sub-categories more useful than a fully diffused hierarchy.

I vote to nominate the subcategories as "non-diffusing" and add all cartridges into this main category.

If I don't hear any dissenting views, I will start this work next week.

Category title - Pistol or Handgun

There seems to be a trend to move away from "pistol" to "handgun" in names of lists, tables and categories. I propose that this category is renamed "Handgun and rifle cartridges". StraightAsADie (talk) 05:19, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
