Untitled[edit]

I just added the merge tag on top. I think it is a little redundant to have the two categories. Either this one should go into the Science fiction technology or vice versa.--Oldsoul 20:39, July 9, 2005 (UTC)

Just because it's fictional doesnt mean its SCIENCE fictional. THere could be another type of story, like historical fiction, with different technology. --Zxcvbnm 15:29, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have just noticed the redundancy too, but now there are three categories: this one (Fictional technology), Fictional devices and Science fiction technology. I'm proposing the following categories:
Fictional technology: Only other categories would go in this category, starting with the ones following.
Futuristic technology: This would include most of what is considered science fiction including technology from Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, etc.
Cyberpunk technology: This is the computer arm of science fiction, and therfore should probably be in the above category. (I'm throwing it out for thought.)
Steampunk technology: This is stuff like the Wild Wild West movie and The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne television series.
Fantasy technology: This would be technology developed in a magic-dominated world. (Though, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.)
The easy option is just to merge all three of these existing categories into Fictional technology. If there isn't discussion by Friday, I'll go ahead and make one of these changes. If there is discussion, then we (hopefully) can reach a consensus by next week. Val42 03:27, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
After thinking about it for a few days, it seems that there isn't a fictional technology that isn't science fiction technology. Think about it, if it wasn't invented at the time of the fiction, then they are making up a device based on near or far science; hence science fiction technology. Cyberpunk is simply doing the same thing from a different era and going in a different direction from what happened with actualy technology from the time period. If there do need to be subcategories, we can make them up later. Since there was no objection, I'm going forward to make the change. Val42 23:32, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A further division?[edit]

Is there not a diffence between fictional technology which is extremely unlikely to ever be realized (the infinite improbability drive comes to mind), and those where are reasonable specultive extenstion of current technology (exploratory engineering) such as a space elevator.

This is a good idea. I've got two more ideas: faster-than-light communication and faster-than-light travel. Here are the five categories that are proposed then:

  1. Fictional technology
    1. Exploratory engineering
    2. Faster-than-light communication
    3. Faster-than-light travel
    4. Steampunk technology

I suggest that we just go with these five categories, or one category with four subcategories. I'm making the changes. Val42 18:44, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
