Plural?[edit]

Shouldn't this category be "cover albums" instead of "covers albums"? - Brian Kendig (talk) 17:33, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not so sure. A "cover album" sounds like a version of all the songs on somebody else's album, but a "covers album" could be an album of cover songs that had not necessarily been previously published together.
Note that this category page given a main link in 2012 to a section of the page Cover version, but that section was deleted in 2015 by user:SilkTork as unsourced speculation and opinion: [1]
The related term "Tribute album" formerly had its own page but was merged & redirected by the same editor:[2]   It now redirects to Album#Tribute_or_cover which currently does not distinguish between tribute albums and cover albums. – Fayenatic London 21:39, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not for standards singers[edit]

This category makes no sense for interpretative singers who focus on pop standards, such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. By definition, everything they sing is somebody else's song ... that's the whole point. It only makes sense for artists who normally record their own songs but are departing for a particular album. Wasted Time R (talk) 10:37, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. From the other angle, Gershwin, Cole Porter, etc. will not have made definitive recordings of their songs that other artists are 'covering'. They wrote the songs to be performed by other artists. Taking the current rationale, this category ought to include every recording of classical music, as these are almost entirely people covering other composers' work. But that would be daft..
