what reference purpose is served by placing all this disparate set of people into one category (and no sub-categories)? Might sub-categories already exist that could be used here? Or subcategories could be created that could not only be used here but in other categories--again serving the purpose of limiting the number of article in a category by proper use of subcategories. Example: a category named 'American patriots in the American Revolution' might be used as a subcat of this category, as well as of the 'People of the American Revolution' category. In any case, caution and care needs to be used to avoid creating massively populated categories, which take a good deal of work to later change. Thanks Hmains

I added further clarification in the category description. Basically any Americans or American colonists who advocated revolution against their current government falls under this category. Dugwiki 16:56, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"This includes both people who advocated revolt against Britain to achieve American independence, and people who advocated revolt against the American government to secede from the union." I think this should be widened. There have been revolutonaries like John Brown, Daniel Shay, and Nat Turner who have engaged in revolts against the American government who did not advocate seccession from the Union. I think the definiton should be clarified to include this. They were consdered revolutionaries in there time.
Also, there have been Americans in areas like Hawaii and Texas who revolted against governments that lead to a change of soveriegnty resulting in American rule. Would Davey Crocket in Texas be an American revolutionary? He was an American and the revolt delivered Texas to American rule... LarryQ 04:15, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The objections to this category could probably have been avoided if, as Hmains intimated above, the category had been properly subcategorized. I've created subcategories for Signers of the Declaration of Independence and those who fought for the Patriot cause. This will create some structure for the category, once the massive double-categorization is eliminated. —Kevin Myers 19:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
