  • UE Not Encyclopaedic. Violates WP:NOT. Image is a modified version of George Bush with an X in an apparent attempt to make a political statement. It does nothing to furthering the goals of Wikipedia and in fact works to polarize the community. Wikipedia:Userboxes#Content_restrictions restricts the use of this image in userboxes so it's claim for use in uerboxes is dubious. Also BLP issues may arise if this is precedent.   • Delete - it's insulting to a living person in a way that's unnecessary, and does divide Wikipedia, especially on political (and possibly) nationalistic grounds. I am going to clarify that I am retaining my keep on Karl Marx, but I think the situation is different. Crossing out a picture of a living person is separate - crossing out a picture of Tony Blair is patently offensive, whereas crossing out a picture of, say Adam Smith, is not, because he is dead, and not really the leader of a nation. Responsive comment: Actually, it's not so "obvious", but rather, the above "reasoning" is a bit of hyperbole, a very substantial stretch of reason in support of a point. Less of a hyperbole, IMO, is a scenario wherein numerous images get turned into "No [pick your preferred peeve]", a pictoral POV. What is easily forseeable with today's ubiquitous photoshopping-at-home capabilities is a large prolliferation of such modified images that people can pass around like self-conferred POV barnstars. WP is entitled to set limits on the place and manner of free speech in userboxes and on talk pages, and it already has done so, as follows: People obviously are entitled to their POVs on talk pages and in userboxes, within the limits of what Wikipedia is and what Wikipedia is not, and within the limits of Wikipedia:Userboxes#Content_restrictions. Among other things, WP is not a free-content host, not a blog, , not a battleground, not a soapbox, and it is not a repository of links, images, or media files. ... Hi, "I hear your pain", to quote another US national politician. This is, at least to me, not about "winning" over-against anybody else. And, I don't know how these images were deleted at the moment, but this discussion still appears open. And, the Image:No Karl Marx.jpg image still appears to be in place at the moment (discussion immediately below). So, as of the submission of this comment of mine, the discussion appears not to be officially concluded. As to my opinion, it's already been said w.r.t. both the Bush and Marx "X-images". ... comment - it should be the user's choice what they have on their userpage. As long as it's not really really nasty it can be lived with. If you don't like my or anyone else's userpage - try to find consensus before editing said userpages. Your Wikipedia page is for communicating with other volunteers on the project. reply comment - I didn't upload this one in fact I nominated it for deletion in line with an agreement between Tbeatty and myself that images consisting of politicians' faces with large Xs across them have no benefit to the project. However I withdrew this nomination after noting the wide use of this kind of images in userboxes. As long as both the GWB picture and the Marx picture are treated the same - i.e both deleted or both kept, I'll be happy. --Lancastria 13:01, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I could be wrong, but I believe the image is licensed under the Attribution-NoDerivs 2.0 license (see the source). This isn't allowed to be used in Wikipedia, so I'm listed it for deletion.   • Delete: Iconic, perhaps, to fans of The Simpsons and to the show itself, as a broader representation of American culture, I don't think so. This is one show, in a sea of American television programming, while long running, and rated fairly high for a FOX show it is probably not iconic in the sense that it represents something of colossal impact on American culture. The photo has been compared to the very famous image of Lenin and Stalin also sitting side by side in a similar pose, as the two relationships have often been compared. Access of photographers to meetings between Saddam and Bakr was rare and highly controlled.
