Summary
DescriptionWhite Marble Freize- Nelson's triumph at the battle of Cape St Vincent - Triton Square, London (4081016009).jpg |
This is Triton Square, on the Euston Road in London. It is the site of the former Thames Television Studios (which was demolished back in the early '90s). It is being developed into Regent's Place. This is 2 Triton Square - now home of Santander (previously Abbey - since re-named Santander). A stone sculpture on metal legs, with a tree growing out of it. I thought this might have something to do with Horatio Nelson (but wasn't sure) If it is, then it is a white marble freize created by Edward Hodges Baily (1788 - 1876), created in the first quarter of the 19th century. It depicts Nelson's triumph at the battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797. It was originally going to be installed as part of the decoration of the Marble Arch, and hasn't been displayed since its creation in the early 19th century. It was created around 1826. It was commissioned by George IV, it was supposed to form part of a Triumphal Arch that was never completed. It was recently rediscovered. The relief panel here depicts the surrender of the Spanish Admiral Don Francisco Xavier Winthuysen, defeated at the Battle of St Vincent in Feb 1797, who weakly hands his sword to Nelson while supported by two sailors, watched by other sailors and British officers. Installed as part of British Land's public art at Regent's Place. |
