Summary

Description
English: United Airlines Flight 232's number 2 engine included an undetected fault in its stage 1 fan disk, causing part of it to separate in flight toward the aircraft's left horizontal stabilizer. The remaining disk was immediately thrown out of balance and was ejected toward the right horizontal stabilizer, scattering titanium shrapnel as it came apart. Several pieces impacted the aft fuselage. The aircraft's three hydraulic systems were compromised, one each in the left/right stabilizers and another which connected just below where the fan disk failed.
