Help with sources[edit]
Hi I’d appreciate some help from a native/fluent reader of Japanese. A number of new articles have been created recently that have appeared in the queue for New Pages Patrol, including Katō Yasutoki, Yamazaki clan, Takagi Masahira and Matsudaira Yorisato (there are many others). All of these articles are sourced to the same half dozen offline sources, for which no page numbers are provided. I’d like some assurance that these sources exist and actually cover the topics described, as I fear they may perhaps just be there for decorative purposes to validate an otherwise unsourced or poorly sourced translation from ja.wiki. - Hi Mccapra, thanks for this notification. I checked Katō Yasutoki, and it is either an unmarked direct translation or a total machine translation of the Japanese article (which far predates this one). WP:TNT may apply because there is no clean version that isn't a copyvio and there is no original contribution. As for the books that are listed, they exist. I don't have quick access to their contents, but given that the Japanese-language article does not cite them, I have no reason to believe that they corroborate the places in the article where they are being applied. - The second source cited is about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and there is no reason why a minor aristocrat from the 19th century would be discussed in a book on 16th-century Japan. This appears to be an attempt to mask the direct and/or machine translation as a cited article creation. Dekimasuよ! 04:09, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- Mccapra, Takagi Masahira has the same problems (incorrect sourcing, pure machine/direct translation), but in telling ways. When names have articles on the Japanese Wikipedia, they appear to be transcribed to English correctly. But the Japanese-language article on Takagi Masahira has a redlink to "松平維賢" at the beginning of the biography section. The new English-language article gives the reading of the first name as "Yasuyosho" but it is actually "Korekata" and it is extremely unlikely that any Japanese speaker would guess "Yasuyosho". The correct detail could also have been determined if the "translator" actually looked for other outside sources with the information, such as this. I am quite busy for the rest of the day, but this should be taken to WP:ANI—a preventive and/or disruption block and copyvio deletions are in order. If you take this to ANI, please feel free to reference this section, and if further input from a Japanese speaker becomes necessary I can try to reply there later on. - Hi Mccapra, I did follow up on this at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Wildlover22 and I'll be blocking Exam26 for the reasons noted there. That should make it possible to delete the problematic articles under WP:CSD#G5. However, if there turns out to be any meaningful objection to the block, please do take this to ANI. - Actually I’ve moved all their creations to draft. The topics are all certainly or plausibly notable but just lack sources. If another editor wants to tidy the translations, verify the use of Japanese text (I discovered Exam26 does not read Japanese) and provide decent sources, there’s no reason why those articles should not be in mainspace. Request for comment: Naming of Sotetsu line stations[edit]
Sōtetsu Shin-yokohama Line and Hazawa yokohama-kokudai Station both have capitalization that looks extremely odd to the English reader, but (in the case of the station) is reflected in official signage. However, "Yokohama" is a proper name and per MOS:HYPHENCAPS we should use capitals for it in both cases. If you have thoughts on this topic, please comment at Talk:Sōtetsu Shin-yokohama Line. Japanese mythology family trees are a mess[edit]
The family trees on articles relating to Japanese mythology are big mess.
- For starters I do not understand why we have 2 family trees at Jimmu.
- Family tree of Japanese monarchs and Family tree of Japanese deities are way too similar and the Family tree of Japanese monarchs has some people groups and clans that aren't even connected to the imperial family.
- Many of these family trees make it unclear whether or not they come from the Nihon shoki or Kojiki.
- Also some of these family trees just looks bad.

- Yes I am aware that the first family tree at Jimmu is from the Kojiki. But the Consorts and children section still looks pretty bad. CycoMa1 (talk) 21:38, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Requesting someone to check an article for accuracy[edit]
I tried my darndest to try to make sure that the sources used in Puff-puff (Dragon Quest) are used accurately, but being that I ain't got Japanese knowledge, I can't guarantee that I didn't flub details. - I checked the article's description against 10 Japanese sources.
- As far as I could see, all the sentences that were sourced from the Japanese article were identified within the article from which they were sourced. There appears to be no contradictory descriptions in the article and the source.
- In addition, all 10 sites are operated by companies with solid identities and appear to meet Wikipedia's criteria. 狄の用務員 (talk) 21:04, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Use of IPA in Japanese brand names[edit]
It is not uncommon to see a pronunciation, usually the perceived "correct" foreign (i.e. "English") pronunciation shown in IPA as part of or alongside a brand name. E.g. ɛ̃fini, or Olympus μ [mju:] (as it should be written †). (There was a small section in the IPA article, sourced to a blog written by John Wells, who is an international authority on all things phonetical, but it was removed for some stupid WP:REASON. So not much help available.) But the Olympus article has ended up being called "Olympus mju", which is simply nonsense. I put a comment on the talk page 10 years ago, as a result of which nothing happened. What would be the best way to go about sorting this out?
