Brad Tryon (born May 14, 1987), better known by his stage name PREF1X, is an American hip hop artist from Sacramento, California. He is signed to Powell Productions, ran by his friend and manager, Noah Powell. He has also published songs on So High Productions, and records at 17 Hertz Studios.[1]

On January 1, 2010 Pref1x released his first mixtape titled Pref1x Project. His music has been reviewed by major record labels which include Shady Records, Atlantic Records, as well as Def Jam. He has also announced the upcoming release of his first studio album titled D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit. Pref1x is a performer of electro hop music with the exception of some regular-based hip hop music.

Early life[edit]

Bradley Colin Tryon was born on May 14, 1987 in Oxnard, California to a Roman Catholic family. Growing up, he delt with various struggles. Tryon was influenced by hip hop, his biggest music influences include Michael Jackson,[2] Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Atmosphere, and Tupac Shakur. Tryon attended and graduated from Christian Brothers High School with hopes of going to college, but instead decided to pursue a career in hip hop music. He has a brother who is a high school graduate, and a sister named Jessica Howell.

Pref1x originally performed in a group with friend and fellow rapper Kid A.Y. The group eventually disbanded for an unknown reason, but they remained close. They had recorded two songs together called "Long Gone" and "A Sample of Perfection".[3] Pref1x used the songs for his solo career, stating they featured Kid A.Y.

2009 - 2011: Pref1x Project[edit]

Pref1x released his first single "Michael Jackson" in 2009, and is known for being one of the first tributes to the late singer. Pref1x was interviewed on July 7, 2009 on NBC News in Chico, California about the song,[4] where he revealed Jackson to be his biggest influence in the music industry.

On January 1, 2010 Pref1x released his first mixtape entitled Pref1x Project.[5] The mixtape contianed 20 tracks, including the single "Michael Jackson" and another single called "Puffin' On La" which later became a music video.[6]

On July 1, 2011 Pref1x released his fifth single called "I Remember".[7] The song is a bonus track on Pref1x Project. The background instrumental to the song is composed by deadmau5, and is an original work by him also called "I Remember", and features EDC.

2010 - present: D.E.M.O. and Shady Records[edit]

On July 24, 2010 Pref1x released the first single to be on his first studio album, D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit. The song is called "Mega Man"[8] and is the third solo single by Pref1x. Originally, D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit was to be released in the Summer of 2010, but moved to Summer of 2011.[9]

On December 14, 2010 Sunshine Estates released a single called "Play To Win" featuring Pref1x.[10]

On March 19, 2011 Pref1x's fourth single and second single off of D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit called "Color of Your Sky" was released.[11] The song features Los Angeles pop rock singer Kaero.

Throughout 2011 Pref1x has had meetings with Shady Records about signing to a record deal. He also met with Def Jam Records, but was not signed to the label. Pref1x showed managers at Shady Records music from his past mixtape and upcoming album, and will be meeting with them again on music-related subjects.

Pref1x announced via Facebook and Twitter in May, 2011 that a music video for the fourth single on D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit would be shot on June 10, 2011. However, due to personal reasons, the filming of the music video was postponed. The music video will be shot in July.

On July 11, 2011 Pref1x announced via Twitter that he was presenting his music to Shady Records, Def Jam, and Atlantic Records as well.[12]

Pref1x made various announcements throughout 2011 about his upcoming second music video for his to be released song entitled "The City".[13] Originally, the video was announced to be shot on June 10 and June 11, but was delayed for unannounced reasons. "The City" is going to be the third single off of D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit. According to Pref1x, the song is already recorded and parts of the music video have already been shot. It is directed by Andrew Bennett who also did work for Katy Perry and Nickleback, most notabally their song "Rockstar".

On August 30, 2011 Pref1x leaked his next single "Killer Side" on YouTube.[14]

Pref1x released "You Are What You Are" on December 27, 2011, as well as uploading it onto YouTube. It is the fourth single to be released on D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit.[15]

On January 10, 2012 Pref1x finally released the song and music video for "The City".[16] It is the fifth single to be released on Pref1x's studio album D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit. The video was directed by Andrew Bennett with the executive producer role given to Noah Powell.

Pref1x entered Funk Volume's "Don't Funk Up Our Beats IV" contest in an attempt to get signed to the label after his meetings with Shady Records did not result in a record deal. His song and video "Play To Win"[17] was entered in the contest and uploaded on YouTube. Upon meeting Hopsin, the founder of Funk Volume, Pref1x recorded a song titled "Epic" featuring Funk Volume recording artist Dizzy Wright. He also appeared at the end of the video for "Teamwork Makes the Dream Work" by Dizzy Wright.

Pref1x finished working on D.E.M.O. Diary Entries of a Man in Orbit in early May 2012. He announced that the album would be a digital release on iTunes featuring 16 track including a bonus and an EP.

Pref1x announced he would be releasing his third music video called "The World Can Wait." Though originally announced for release on June 1, the video was finally released on June 5.[18]

Other ventures[edit]

On March 28, 2010 Pref1x debuted his acting career with a minor skit titled "Dante's In Furlough".[19] The skit was produced by Powell Productions as well as Wanted Productions.

Pref1x debuted a second YouTube channel called "PrestyleFridaysPREF1X" in which he uploads a video every Friday of him performing a freestyle rap to various hip hop instrumentals.

Personal life[edit]

Tryon works as a server for Buca di Beppo since November of 2010. He is also a Roman Catholic and member of the Democratic Party. He also has seemed to have taken an interest in cannabis culture, having made the song and music video "Puffin' On La" and performing at the Pre-420 Concert in California. He is open about his use of marijuana.
