History

I added a good deal of material to the intro, but someone local should fact check it, as I haven't been in Middletown much for several years.

This entry needs a historical discussion, including when the city was founded, growth of the city, etc. Compare it to the entry for Goshen, NY, which is far more complete. --Ssilvers 02:27, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Scotchtown Branch

I am seeing references to Scotchtown Branch, NY, which Google Maps shows as being in or near Middletown. Is this a neighborhood or post office or something? -- Beland 20:49, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Scotchtown is hard to describe. It's a neighborhood of sorts; kind of a convergence of Middletown, the Town of Wallkill, Bloomingburg, and Goshen. Some of Scotchtown is in the Middletown school district, and some is in the Pine Bush district. It has its own zip code (10941) which is probably the "Scotchtown branch" (ie, Post Office branch) you're seeing. Kafziel Talk 20:58, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
There is an article called Scotchtown, New York, with more information. -- Ssilvers 17:49, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Scotchtown used to be a settlement on par with the original tiny Middletown settlement. When the turnpikes and railroads came through Middletown, it grew into an industrial hub while Scotchtown remained rural. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotchtown,_New_York Although in the Town of Wallkill, I suspect many people who live there feel like Middletown encompasses them, too. This website has a lot more history on Scotchtown, including old maps: http://www.scotchtownhighlander.com/ . Wordreader (talk) 05:27, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! I added the link to scotchtownhighlander.com to the Scotchtown, New York article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:46, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Actor Richard Kiley

It seems that he died in Middletown of Leukemia in 1999. Some sources say Warwick, but perhaps he died at Horton and lived in Warwick? Can anyone nail this down? I bet there was an obit. in the Record. Should we add him to the list of Middletown notables? Best regards, -- Ssilvers 13:39, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Don't get too excited about attaching Mr Kiley to Middletown. I was taken to Richard Kiley's house once by a friend of his when I was in high school (he wasn't home, but his wife was charming) - it definitely wasn't in Middletown at the time, though I don't remember exactly where it was. It was very rural, an old farmhouse, not the manison of a Hollywood entertainer. Of course that's not to say that he didn't move after that. If I remember, I'll look for his obit in the library microfilms. Wordreader (talk) 04:53, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Requests to re-delete restored content

As called for in this edit summary:

Request 1

I hereby request concensus for the re-deletion of coordinates appearing outside the infobox, for the following reasons:

  • As per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cities/Guideline#External links, "Any existing {{Geolinks-US-cityscale}} templates should be removed. Latitude and longitude should be present only once and linked to the mapping services by using either {{Infobox Settlement}} or {{coord|lat|long|type:city(population)_region:ISO3166-code|display=title}}."
  • Three coordinates are available in the infobox (center, highest point, and lowest point). These should be sufficient. Additional coordinates in the title, external links, or geography section are redundant per Wikipedia:Use common sense.

--JBC3 (talk) 22:10, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I have no objection to this deletion. Thanks for this explanation. I suggest that you wait 2 days, and if no one else comments, go right ahead. BTW, if I had understood that the coordinates were duplicated in the infobox, I would not have objected. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:35, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
I like to keep my edit summaries brief. I figured rm redundant coord would cover it, as redundant implies that there are already coordinates somewhere else in the article, and a quick look would confirm this. Perhaps rm redundant coord, already in infobox, although longer, would help me avoid this being an issue in the future. --JBC3 (talk) 18:48, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
LOL. A quick look would confirm it to you, but I am not as proficient at finding coordinates as you are. No big deal, you were quite right, I just didn't know where to look. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:29, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Request 2

I hereby request concensus for the re-deletion of the Communities and locations in and around Middletown section (with exception to the image), for the following reasons:

  • There are no communities or locations listed in this section that are in Middletown itself.
  • The article being about Middletown, its content should largely be about the city and not about the communities and locations of its neighboring municipalities.
  • A Surrounding area section is already included in this article. It provides links to the municipalities around Middletown, wherefrom one can get more detailed information such as what is presently included in the Communities and locations in and around Middletown section.

--JBC3 (talk) 22:10, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi. First bulletpoint: Well, Mechanicstown may be technically outside the City limits, but I think everyone who lives there would say they live in Middletown. But no big deal, I have no objection to deleting the words "in or". Second bulletpoint: I disagree. It gives context to the article to identify the neighboring areas and describe their relationship to Middletown. But see below Third bulletpoint: I can see why you might be confused, and perhaps we need to clarify or even find a way to combine these sections, but they are not redundant. The surrounding area section lists places that are major geographical areas, like townships, cities and villages, some of which (e.g. Newburgh) are as much as a half hour's drive away. The communities section is, I believe (I didn't start this article), intended to show small/tiny areas of interest that are very close to Middletown and have a special connection to it - I can see that most of these places are part of the Middletown school system. I think, now that we are looking at it closely, that this probably can be improved and described more clearly, but I think (see bullet point 2) that describing these small areas that don't have their own articles, and explaining their connection to or locations compared with, Middletown, is relevant. Maybe together we can improve the information and make it more useful. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:35, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
I agree that, if an understanding of the city would not be complete without some mention of the surrounding communities, it would be helpful to have it be part of the article. The section, as it stands now, does not specify or substantiate this connection exists. Simply listing these surrounding communities when they don't even have their own articles is rather pointless (as someone who knows nothing of the area, I can speak to that personally). Someone with local knowledge is probably better suited for this task, not I. I'd still prefer to delete it, but respect that there isn't concensus on this. --JBC3 (talk) 18:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
I'll write a little intro to give it some context, but I disagree with your premise: the information is *more* important because these communities do *not* have their own articles, and therefore the only way that one would be likely to be aware of them is by reading the explanations. Of course, some references need to be added eventually that give verifiable sources for the information, but that will have to wait for another day. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:33, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Ulster County/Orange County history

Does anyone know if the area that became Middletown was in Ulster County prior to the 1798 division? Southern Orange County became a brand new "Rockland County" and to compensate for the loss, the state's Legislature took a section of Ulster to give to Orange. Montgomery, Newburgh, Pine Bush, and Walden all used to be in Ulster, but I don't know exactly where the county border lay in relationship to Middletown. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 05:01, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

I doubt it, since Middletown is in the southwestern part of the county, but to add any information about this history would require a citation to a WP:Reliable source. I suggest that if you want to discuss this more, you make a new heading at the bottom of this page, as new discussions should start at the bottom so people can see them. Also, it seems like some of this information ought to be in either/both of the Orange County, New York and Ulster County articles. Please start new discussions at the bottom of the page per Talk page guidelines#Layout. Thanks! All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:44, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

New Federal Courthouse?

I have deleted the recent claim that there is a Federal Courthouse in Middletown, since none appears here. List of United States federal courthouses. If one was built in 2007, as the editor claims, there must be a news article about it, but none is found on Google. Please supply a WP:Reliable source. -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:57, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi ssilvers, Forgive me but I'm a nubie, (Please don't bit the nubies). The link would be www.uscourts.gov/court_locator.aspx. Also, the corner stone on the building shows the date and the name of the architect. The address is 25 South Street, not the 24-26 South Street that I had previously stated, (whoops). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Applejet (talkcontribs) 11:37, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
