Wayland vs. X11[edit]

Why is everywhere Wayland? Picture dipicts it as that wayland is the default, but it is not true.

  • Maybe it will be the future but it is not a present (Q1 2015). Currently Fedora has some experimental implementation in mainline but it is not default and it does not support everything as X. Debian has it in testing version. You can install it in other distributions but the functionality is just for "Aah, it is wayland, wow" and not for the production use.
  • This picture is about "The Linux Graphics Stack" and not about "Wayland".
  • This picture is mixture of future and present. It is not current architecture of common Linux distributions. It completely separates proprietary drivers. They currently don't work with wayland, but X can run on top off them without any problem. In the future, proprietary drivers will probably support wayland, so no need to separate them and make this picture more complex and more incorrect.
